General Medical issues thread

Gaviscon after last sip of water just before bed helped me a lot to keep that awful slightly full nausea gaggy feeling at bay next morning.
Shocks to the system even now a few years. Still get the gaggy feeling when stressed or missed a meal n hungry.
But life rolls on and taking the meds and the ongoing side effects is the price bargain for a life living well after 🙏🏼🍾

All the very best on your journey.
Thanks @LinaLee for your support and the practical tips. I’m looking forward to getting through this so I can get in with my life. So many people to see. So many places to go. So many things to do.

And something to be aware of, when it is all over, done and dusted, you are likely to fall in a heap for a period of time. All your energy has been used to get through treatment and when it's finished, there is an initial high, followed by a period of blackness.

Particularly if life has been (necessarily) structured around the medical. I remember also the 'concern' about stopping treatments at the end. Almost a concern that maybe it's too soon or something.

Interesting. After three and a half weeks of being very ordinary on my last chemo I have collected around 2.5 tonne of cut rock from an old stone wall and over a couple of days loaded onto the ute to bring home for a future project. The past couple of days I have felt ok, & I don't feel on a high, & it was hard work, Just sick of sitting around, are you saying it will be short lived?

Oh please try to take it easy n buildup in stages. Not sure if you’re aware, during treatments there’s lots of other meds they dose you with mostly steroi_s, anti nausea and stuff like that to keep the worst of chemo at bay n does give you a false sense of strength. At least for my treatment protocol. That’s wears out after a while n then the fatigue hits. Also, cells don’t die immediately on chemo dose. So there’s a wearing down of the body and the new cells get generated. That’s the drop off mentioned. Like you I went back running a week or so post last dose n ended up straining my calf n hamstring even though I kept most of my fitness during treatment. The recovery from injury takes twice as long if not longer post chemo. I also never got back my good sleeping habits now I lie awake at night which adds to the fatigue. Things change. Take time to learn the new you n I’m not going to use the word limitation but different. I broke a second toe from just stubbing it against furniture 😂 about six months after last dose. I never got feeling back normal in the second n third toe either and it makes itself known after a long day of walking 😜 Things are almost same but different 😉

Wishing ongoing success with your recovery and good health @LinaLee .
Thanks @prozac and I too hope you have a good recovery n good health.

An advice my chemo nurse coordinator said but went out one ear is be kind to yourself. Did not understand it at first and still struggle to apply as I’m one of those that like ticking things off a list 😅😅😅

I now need a list but I keep forgetting where I put it.

I have to agree with all the comments re recovery. When Mr Terry had his brain tumor surgery we were advised that it would take a minimum of six months to be even kinda back. Of course we boohooed that and thought of all the things that he would do around our place once the initial (month or so ) recovery happened
Well guess what specialist and all those doctors were right. It was horrendous . He went back to work at 9 months 3 hours a day for three days a week. He didn't really become himself again for about two years . Of course he still has intermittent right side paralysis but he can travel :) . Not all his tumour was able to be removed so he has mobility and suchlike issues going forward. He travels and we just set up various supports along the way . Thankfully his issues are all physical with stamina and no cognitive

Just saw a TV commercial for SAS Australia (I think ... I don''t watch these shows) and a clip of Anthony Mundine saying, "It's not about the setback, it's about the comeback" Yeah I know its AM, but I thought it a good state of mind expression for some of our AFF members who are having setbacks.
I've got my motto in my signature, so if anyone wants it, it's yours. ;)

Worse still, I like to write things down for my medical appointments, but I have a thought then can't remember what it was to include it on my list.
Did they tell you about chemo brain? I lost a bit of the more big words vocabulary for a couple of years. It’s almost mostly back now but memories are hazy in some bits. It’s a thing 😁. So when lost for the right word I just say you know the “thingy” 🤣🤣🤣 problem solved.

Yes, definitely had that. I could not string a sentence together, conversations in slow motion. Getting a bit better now but "thing" gets used alot, and tonight.

No they didn’t. But that would explain why I asked Mr Seat 0A who was busy using noisy power tools if he was wearing his hearing aids today. I meant ear muffs. And he doesn’t wear hearing aids 😂

Exactly thats the thing now 😉

Just got asked a question at work this morning n I know I should have the instant recall n I know I have it somewhere in my brain but can’t retrieve just at that moment 🤔 “thing” is not going to work in this case 😬

Does get better after treatment is over I’ve been assured but am not convinced you’ll be 100% back as I still have gaps but obviously not as much loss Or slower recall.

Hang in there.

It does get better even but then age catches up so not sure which is the contributing factor after a while especially in my case 🤣🤣🤣 and I sometimes use it as excuse to forget a person’s name of which I was terrible before 😮

Hang in there.
