General Medical issues thread

When I found out my LDL was 4.9 and had to go on statins, I texted my brother and he said make sure you get prescribed the one where you can still eat grapefruit (as we both love it). I texted him my script (APX-Rosuvastatin 10mg) and he came back saying that's the right one to have (same as him). Been on it almost 3 months and haven't been back for follow-up bloods yet.
Simvastatin and atorvastatin (lipitor) have the interaction while rosuvastatin (crestor) and pravastatin are ok

If an X-ray for security then you get wanded +\- a pat down. Plus they usually get you to take off your shoes and belt. I don’t see why as they are going to wand you anyway. One guy at Changi agreed so that time just wanded.
The new scanners are a godsend. Straight through with no problem.
If they want me to take my shoes off at the moment then unless they have a shoe horn handy they're going to have to put them back on for me 😭

That's what I am on too. Of-course if it was only a glass or fruit once in a blue moon it would not matter anyway. Happy my LDL is just 1.1 :)

At OOL I told security I had a pacemaker. I was pulled aside and tested for explosives!

Yes , I know that you know that she does not.
But because it is vased on facts there is more oomph in the shock treatment👍
I've been known to be a bit dim.

Well @VPS going thru scanners can be a bit more time consuming. Usually belt off and often shoes off and empty pockets to go for the extra scanning. We went to Wide Fit Shoes in London to get slip on sneakers as having a titanium knee makes getting shoes on and off trickier.
Of course my scrap value has soared so Mrscove should be happy with that.

MrP has a titanium elbow joint and doesn't have any issues

Thanks - I wear orthotics and tend to wear comfy boots so slip ons don't make the grade. Hopefully the bend will improve as time goes on

Got the blood and urine tests back. UTI. Possibly related to the problematic SPC change last week General Medical issues thread
They gave me some antibiotics. Follow up with GP next week once the additional tests on the bacteria are back and see if a change to the meds and/or another SPC change are needed.

1st time I've had a UTI. I guess it's to be expected after 9.5 months of having a tube inserted through my abdomen into the bladder.

You might want to have a look at Xelero range. 'Slip on' and then tighten a metal wire lace by twisting the button on the shoe:

I got this from my podiatrist as it has a stiffer sole for my arthritic toe and I have an orthotic in it as well. You can get 'dressier' styles.

Strangely you have to look very closely on their web site to see this style, but its there and very comfy and easy to put on.

Vegan friendly makes all the difference- thanks - I'll take a look

It's important in sudden witnessed cardiac arrhythmia
Ive had battles with various people down in Jindabyne who want to install AED (Automated Packer whackers) around Jindabyne no doubt driven by the companies that make them. There is a prevailing thought that it will help in all sort of collapse including one person asking "what happens if I run out of epipen"...

So there are a few of these dotted around the place, and no doubt when someone needs one s/he will collapse next to an AED. When asked what happens when the person collapsed 20 minutes from an AED the answer was "well someone can go and get it". No answer of course about what to do in the meantime.

No one listened when I explained that an AED only works in certain circumstances and if it does not deliver a shock, it does not mean it is faulty - it just means the condition is not amenable to a shock.
No one listened that basic life support is not an AED but ABCD. No one was interested to do courses in CPR even though I explained that AED alone will not save lives. AED only saves lives if done in combination with ABCD

Reading and joining this thread as I recently (coming up to 4 weeks ago) suffered a 3 part proximal humerus fracture requiring ORIF surgery so I'm now part of the partly made of metal community on AFF... with a plate and I think 14 screws in my shoulder.

Recovery is slow but improvements coming every day. It remains to be seen just how much movement I'll get back in my arm but I'm hopeful that it will be quite good eventually.

I'll share some updates as I continue this healing journey.

Doesn't sound like fun.

How to ruin a quick trip to Brisbane. Woke up with tachycardia then in atrial flutter and so a visit to Greenslopes private ED.

given a beta blocker to slow things down, there for 2.5 hrs, and I’ll be seeing my own cardiologist back in Hobart this week.
MrLtL has been into VT and PCV since Easter - ablation in July and ICD in August and now much better. Not pleasant for you at all. Hope your cardiologist can sort it out.

I did this about 6 years ago now. No fun at all. I have pretty much all movement back except I can't quite extend my arm perfectly vertical. There is a small bend. Took about 5 months of work with the physio and religiously doing the exercises. I am a full time potter so really need my arms to work. I can't lift as much now but then I am no spring chicken either. The shoulder will still ache a bit some times and get tried but otherwise doesn't restrict me. When it does, I go back to the simple swinging arm exercises and that fixes it.

Thank you for sharing this. I intend to do the same physio wise. I hope I can replicate your level of recovery. I am already amazed at how far I've come in this short time. I'm a millennial (just) so a lot of life yet to live, fingers crossed.
