General Medical issues thread

Sorry but @tgh is right.
I began my current regime on our Cherry blossom cruise last year. I met a fellow on the second leg who was in his 40s and did have muscular dystrophy. His calves were smaller than mine. On excursions I couldn't keep up with him but on sea days doing laps of the walking track I would often lap him. We had a few long talks together. He,like me, believed you have to keep using muscles to keep them as long as you can.

He always studied excursions and planned on seeing what he wanted. deliberately chose more than he thought he could do but virtually always succeeded. As he said I don't know if I can come back so have to use my time wisely.
When asked why I could lap him on the walking track he said his only motivation was the number of steps he could do and knew how ever long it took that;s what he would do. He became my model. When travelling I have different things to see. Around the home steps become very important. The less steps I can do the less I can do the next day usually.

So my iphone and the steps app are staying.
I'm not saying not to step, never said that, but simply do as much exercise as you can without worrying about whether its more or less than what you've done previously especially if trying to achieve high levels is impacting other parts like your hips.

I need a goal. My hips are usually worst exercising the day after little walking such as sitting on a plane all day. Days when I can walk a lot without too much pain are generally after a high steps day. We are all different.

Walking on the Dawn was not fun, my left knee teamed up with my left hip and was very difficult.
There were some thoughts about the sight of the end as I ground out the k's.
Of course the alliance eventually failed , the hip gave up and the knee returned to sullen complaint.
We tend to be who we believe we are..
Backed up by some science, I believe very strongly in using it or losing it.
Pushka's caring comments are relevant in that we should accept with good grace the things we cannot change.. but this is not an excuse for welshing 😰

I understand that we use it or lose it. We had a wonderful trip planned for May 2023 but in January I was struck down by PMR and was using a walking stick but even doing so caused immense pain. Not being dramatic but screaming pain and simply helplessness. If this was my future then I wanted it over. Couldn't dress myself. Bathrooming was a nightmare. Seriously. Of course all the blood markers pointed PMR which the rheumatologist had picked up once I let her know the symptoms (took me 3 weeks of pain and immobility to do that as I don't like bothering her). Within hours of taking steroi_s I could walk. I mentioned I had wanted it to be all over with and she said that depression associated with PMR is common. But it's a reactive one not chronic. Of course I'm still on steroi_ and currently my calf is acting up but it's manageable. But the first thing as soon as could - the next day after steroi_, I walked and walked and walked and made that trip and we sure covered some ground but 20,000 steps was the max and yes I paid for it next day. Tripled the steroi_. Did the trick. So I get it. But as you say sometimes it's out of our hands. Just do our best. And be nicer to ourselves.
