Getting Wine from A to B

Well getting Wine from Melbourne to Noosa actually - youngest sister has moved to Noosa and will be alone for XMAS so the Ette and Moi decided best we go keep her company for 5 days over XMAS.

I am seriously allergic to paying grossly inflated prices for Wine / Champs when it can be acquired at basement prices - so best we take the a reasonable supply with us - planning required. A quick draft from Cellar to yield these:



And:



Plenty of these air padded sleeves at work after Lithium batteries sold so ideal for packing Wine / Champs:



And then packing in hard sided luggage:









Stick a pillow from home in middle for packing:



Then wrap with stretch wrap plaster with FRAGILE stickers from packing bench:



Arrives on conveyer intact - too good for the baggage handlers this time:

I detest waiting for luggage at a carousel, but canna' be avoided.

12 Odyssey / 10 Prodigy young 'un - but yep it is pretty good - but I am kinda coloured with Katnook - fell in love with them on first ever visit to Coonawarra.

It is usually a "safe" 10+ year wine if stored properly, but can be good to try one early (7-8+ yrs) to see how it is developing.

I’m with you, doing the same trip every year now for about 15 years +. I always take wine as the selection in Noosa has historically been horrible and rich loudly overpriced. ( though the Sofitel Noosa introduced a nice range with competitive pricing in the last year or two )

I estimate that the wine carton in the pics below has made about 50+ flights and I’ve never had a broken bottle. I originally acquired the carton in California many years ago and it was part of about 10 doz bottles that we brought back after a family trip. ( everyone was UA business so the excess baggage was limited to about two pieces I think ). The carton is getting a little (!) worn now so might need to replace it soon...

Pretty sure these cartons are still available if you hunt around. Freight forwarders such as Schenker use them for commercial fine wine exports. Think they are called “wine airshippers “. There is also quite a lot of wine-specific luggage available these days though I dont really see a lot of sense in that

I havent used their packaging however the video is pretty impressive ! They are based in Melbourne so might be worth checking out. That said, I’d be way more interested in they had a 12 bottle pack.

Looks like you can buy polystyrene shippers from here Polystyrene Wine Box (12 Bottle)

As PART of any wine order. They do not sell them separately , at least not on line.

Winestar have a pretty good range and pricing so Melbourne members might want to pop into the shop, check out the range and they might let you purchase on the spot ? >

I have transported 100's of bottles from NZ to Melbourne, touch wood no breakages yet. Agree a hard case is a good idea. I either wrap them in clothes but more latterly have used a single or triple polystyrene holder. My wife refuses to take reds as if breaks worse then white in terms of staining. You can also buy individual blow up wine bottle holders.

Great minds! I do exactly the same, Cruiser, using those vessel carriers. I've accumulated quite a few from wine purchases. They are ideal. I don't bother with the pillow. My clothes are packed around them. I came back with 6 bottles from Blighty last month. All arrived safely again.

Good for you keeping your sister company. Nice choices on the wines.

I had two of these air pocket sleeves that I used for years, but had no idea where they came from. They have failed now after many many trips. Did you say they came in parcels protecting lithium batteries? Can you buy them?

I have used something similar to this in my last trips, seems like a good idea, but nowhere near the protection offered from the bags that Cruiser showed. I will certainly consider that, i ran a social function in Hobart last year but will certainly consider Mel to check out your functions, Wine pouches would be a definite bonus.
