How many status credits over and above the 800 that I need to re-qualify as a Platinum member do I need to earn in order to be able to gift platinum companion membership?

500 SC over the requalifying to gift gold, and 1000 over requal to gift platinum. This from the Velocity site:

[TD="class: firstBenefits, bgcolor: transparent"]Companion Gold Membership and Platinum Membership
  • Platinum members, who earn an additional 500 Status Credits over and above the required number of Status Credits to maintain Platinum within their member benefit period, can gift a Gold membership to a companion of their choice.
  • Gold Companion members will be automatically upgraded to Platinum membership if the Platinum member earns an additional 1,000 Status Credits over and above the required number of Status Credits to maintain Platinum within their member benefit period.

1,000

23.3.3 When a Platinum Member earns 1,000 Status Credits over and above the required number of Status Credits to maintain their Platinum Membership Level (800 Status Credits) within their Benefit Period (total 1,800 Status Credits), their nominated Companion Gold Member will automatically be upgraded to Platinum Membership (Companion Platinum Membership) within 7 days. If the Platinum Member hasn’t previously nominated a Companion Gold Member, then they are entitled to nominate a Companion Platinum Member.

1,000

So if I understand correctly, if I gift gold companion membership and then later earn the required additional status credits, the companion gold membership I've gifted will then be automatically upgraded to Platinum. Of course this all has to occur within the current membership year.

Presumably the choice is between not needing the eligible sectors (for gifted) and a soft landing to Silver (for pooling)

Or does a gifted SG/WP have soft landing too?

My bad. Must have been confusing it with another programme

As the OP of this thread I would like to provide an update on this subject.

Speaking to the Platinum desk this afternoon on a different matter, I thought I'd ask about the use-by-date for gifting companion gold/platinum membership.

It was confirmed to me that you in fact have twelve months from the date that you are advised of your eligibility to gift companion membership to use it and is not confined to a person's membership year. In my case my review date is July 20 and I became eligible to gift Gold Companion membership on March 8, 2016 and was told that I have until March 8, 2017 to action the gifting of gold membership. I'm now sitting on 1820 Status Credits and in June I'm doing a return flight in J to JFK which will obviously take me over the 2000 status credits after which I assume I will get another email saying I qualify to gift Platinum membership.

If I receive this email in June 2016 then I will have until June 2017 to gift the membership and the person who receives the gifted membership will keep it for 12 months. So, if I wait until say May 2017 to gift the Platinum Membership then the person who I gift it to will retain that status until May 2018.

I'm pretty certain that I now have the facts correctly understood about the gifting of companion Gold/Platinum Membership

I have gifted WP twice and SG twice and I remember it being 12 months after my renewal date. Basically if you earn it within a Membership year you have 12 months after that Membership year to gift it.

My understanding was that you have 12 months from the date you become eligible to gift the membership and nothing to do with your membership year although the Status Credits do have to be earned within your membership year.

That's how I read it too...from the T&C

23.3.4 A Platinum Member may nominate a Companion Gold Membership or a Companion Platinum Membership by calling the Membership Contact Centre at any time up until 12 months after the date the Platinum Member becomes entitled to redeem the Companion Gold Membership or Companion Platinum Membership.
