I'm abut to start my packing list ... 12 nights in HNL, 1 night in LAX/Disneyland, followed by the lovely Bossreggie lunch in AKL on the way home.

My dilemma: do I take a lovely frock with me to wear on hot date nights while in HNL (gotta be an upside to having my SIL coming) and to the lunch, or do I risk that I'll be able to find something suitable and fits well from somewhere in HNL (most likely Ala Moana or Waikele outlets). If I do this, then I'm also trusting that AKL won't be too chilly ...

So, pack or shop??? What should I do???

Take an empty bag and lots of credit cards. Outlet shopping here you come!

Both Katie - as you're WP you're entitled to three checked pieces of luggage so take what outfits you need for lunches, hot dates plus something cold for AKL that you can layer just in case of warmer weather.

Still go to Ala Moana & Waikele & shop to your hearts content & make sure you leave some time to shop in AKL as they've got some funky designer boutiques over there!

More importantly when you are still unveiling 'new' items of clothing in the weeks to come when your hubby says "is that another new dress" learn to master the art of saying "what, this old thing"??? :p :p :p

Is that how it really works Ozbeachbabe??
Bag inside a bag inside a.........is the way to leave Australia.
US prices for shopping are a fraction of the prices here.
Try coming home to a 3 or 4 page credit card account to confirm you could not afford to save any more money and we will all be impressed.

I also vote for pack and shop.

Why bother taking bags when you can also buy those in the US for a fraction of the price. :D

Ahhhh I presumed that this trip was a follow on trip from a previous go.
Bags can come from many places.....all the discounters in America make many of the bags a bargain.
The latest bags we use are much lighter and stronger and have multi-directional wheels so you can roll 3 suitcases yourself with a very light touch so you can max out the girly purchases and get them to the airport scales/check in counter without using those muscles developed at the gym.

Cove I think you definitely meet the criteria for a girls' shopping trip - you can tag along any day!

Most males on this forum would cringe if their SWMBO's knew how many bags they were really entitled to. I think we need to do an APB along the lines of "attention all SWMBO's your baggage allowance coming back from the US is three, I repeat three bags".

Now before those male WP's start whining, just remember you're getting off lightly because the worst case scenario is she gets 6 & you get none! :p

Evenon the AA flight (in F) from HNL-LAX?? Hmm ...
And even if we go shopping at Gap and Osh Kosh, etc, for Little Miss, her clothes don't take up too much space ....

I'm hoping we'll fly to HNL with 1 bag each (3 of us, Little Miss is 5, so her clothes don't take up much room!), and depart HNL with 2 bags each ... and in the meantime, replace the $30 Hawaiian floral print suitcase we bought for Little Miss there in 2009. Actually we have a bag with a broken wheel bit, might take that over and swap it for a new one from Waikele outlets ... now you've got me thinking!! :)

My rule is that each must carry their own bags ... SWMBO reckons that since I do carry on only, my checked luggage allowance is hers in spirit, if not in Toting.

The other alternative is to buy smaller stuff. We take our friends to the sterling silver section of Tiffany in the US and it gets great results without slamming the credit card and without filling bags to the top. I bought a piece that is a favourite for sub $350 USD. You have to move swiftly past the high priced stuff.

Just not sure how me (only) wearing a lovely little sterling silver piece of jewellry at the lunch in AKL will go over ...
:p ;)

Something with expansion possibilities after Bossreggie lunch

Bring nothing, and just go shopping when you get there! Worse case is you end up wearing Forever 21 ! Best case, well, are those boutiques which I never enter nor can afford ;)

Haven't you found the ABC Stores with the 7 t-shirts for $20.00 special. Subtley not all ABC Stores are alike but IIRC it's the one on Kalakaua Ave that has this offer.

Katie you could do Bulgari instead at that dinner in Auckland. It could go over quite well!
If you get a chance in Los Angeles you should try the Flemings Restaurant in El Segundo for a bone in veal steak to compare with NZ delights with boss reggie.
