Global CrowdStrike IT outage impacting airports and more

I have posted this many times on this forum. That IT people take a great product, then over a period they enhance it into oblivion. And during the process ignore what the customer wants from the product but inserts things that customers have no demand for.
This is different, Crowdstrike Falcon is a security product and, just like your run of the mill anti virus, needs to do updates regularly to counteract the ever shape shifting of the dark web.

I get that it was a code error in the update. But what I don’t get is how searching for memory that doesn’t exist = shut down whole world.

I mean, can’t we design computers to deal with a minor fault like an adult, rather than throwing the toys out of the cot and given us the BSOD?

I’d be pretty certain that’s a gross simplification for the purpose of avoiding a super detailed technical explanation. :)

Take Atlassian as a perfect example but I'm not sure who ruined that one. May not be IT.

The version of JIRA we used was perfect. Really nice features. Easy on use. Easy on the eyes.

The they said they are no longer supporting the older versions and only support JIRA in the cloud. Absolute rubbish. The user interface is awful. The pane on the left is useless but can be collapsed. The fixed pane in the right contains useless information that was fine in the middle of the JIRA ticket. Less real estate to display the important information.

You'd think they would have taken their so called on-prem version and apply all the nice features to the cloud version? Nope.

Sounds like they are twins with Qantas then, doesn’t it?

So Work IT just sent out another email admitting the fix cant be done remotely, set up 2 extra help desk sites and a booking tool. The Problem? First available appointment to get laptop fixed is 29-July, yeah that is practical not!

Airport boards in Atlanta and DFW are still out in some areas. This is going to take a while. American AIrlines and United have recovered, Delta is a mess.

To be honest & having thought about it over the weekend, apart from a few Maccas meals tasting more unusual than normal & potentially the occasional child's party ... how did so many people even notice a clown strike?

No issues with my work laptop this morning, sounds like they got most people back online without needing to be seen in person.
In my office it was a 50% chance all was well or you still had the blue screen, never seen so many people in the office since March 2020. I was on the phone at 6am, getting factory payroll platforms back online for clock card data/processing payrolls so plan B wasnt required.

I have to admit that I didn’t know about the global meltdown until today. Friday was my son’s birthday and we spent it at the Good Food & Wine Show. At 5:00pm closing, we caught a bus to the other end of the city to a brew pub on the river and enjoyed a fabulous meal. A few hours later, bus back to the Convention Centre and took the train home.

Sometimes it’s great being off grid! 😄 (And retired.)
