New Qantas Regional Lounge For Gladstone 08 February 2011
QantasLink today announced plans to open a new Qantas Regional Lounge at Gladstone Airport.

QantasLink Executive Manager, Mr Narendra Kumar, said the new premium lounge would add to the regional airline’s growing network of lounges and premium offering.

“Operating across so much of Queensland – 21 destinations, in fact – QantasLink is strongly committed to providing air services to regional communities and investing in new services and infrastructure,” Mr Kumar said.

“Gladstone is an important LNG, resource and tourism centre in Central Queensland. It is an important market for our airline and it will join our select list of ports to have a Regional Lounge.

“This new Qantas Regional Lounge will provide business travellers, in particular, with significantly improved facilities when travelling between Gladstone and Brisbane, Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns.”

The lounge will reflect the same style as Qantas Club lounges across Australia and offer Qantas Club members and Platinum and Gold Frequent Flyers a range of services including:

  • seating for 55 customers
  • complimentary wireless internet
  • plasma television with Austar
  • a selection of premium refreshments including alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages

Work on the new 190 square metre lounge will commence once final approval is received from the airport authority.

Two Qantas Regional Lounges are already available in Queensland – in Mackay and Rockhampton – and a new lounge will open in Emerald in coming months. Regional Lounges are also located in Broome, Coffs Harbour, Devonport, Kalgoorlie, Karratha, Launceston and Port Hedland, and more are planned.

QantasLink commenced services to Gladstone in 1981 and recently celebrated 29 years of operation to the city on 7 December 2010. Today, the airline operates 43 return services per week between Gladstone and Brisbane, and a further nine return services linking Gladstone with Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns. The majority of flights are operated by the jet-like 74-seat Bombardier Q400 aircraft.

QantasLink has invested over $600 million in 21 new Q400 aircraft since 2006 and a further $250 million is being spent on another seven Next Gen Q400 aircraft with delivery of the first aircraft this month. The Q400 fleet operate alongside the airline’s fleet of five Q200, 16 Q300 and 11 B717 aircraft which operate around 2000 flights each week to 54 metropolitan and regional destinations throughout Australia, as well as Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea.

Didn't DJ mention they may start flying here?

I would not be surprised, and hope so for GLT residents, they must be getting sick of the drive to ROK to avoid the savage pricing, take a look at Feb25 for instance:

Mmmmmm, now to just get the status or the money or employer to afford QP membership. Pity not all GLT residents get paid the high wages/salaries of big industry. Where was the DJ rumour recently?

Qantas must be doing a huge expansion of the terminal!

From memory the terminal at GLT is not very big and in EMD it is the size of 2 standard rooms in a standard house.

Still sounds like a good addition to both of these airports.

That's just ridiculous

But sadly all too common out of GLT.

This thread is bringing back memories of me living in Gladstone and going to pick up/drop off people at the airport - and dreaming that one day, I might be able to fly just like all those other people. Those were the days when the airport was a couple of building and a snack bar. It's fantastic that it's better than that now.

No, the council is in both cases, QF are just taking advantage of the new room, in the case of GLT the runway has also been increased in length.

If any of you happen to go there, I don't suppose you could snap a few photos and post them? I haven't been home for years - it would be great to see what it's like now!

I will post some tomorrow in this thread.

What are they expecting? To have 767s and 787s stop by?

ROK gets 747s and 777s so why not?
What scheduled commercial flights does ROK handle on these aircraft.

An aircraft needing to divert does not count. I cannot see why GLT needs to extend a runway to handle 747s and 777s just so they can handle diverted traffic once in a blue moon. Or is it a case of big brother jealousy?

Perhaps they are hoping QF will schedule 737s to operate the milk run but I have not seen anything significant that would even remotely require a 737 to operate the milk run.
