Hi everyone. I might take my kids with me on some YUPP/KUPPs in the US. There is a decent chance that they'll reach 700 status credits required for Gold, without taking any QF flights at all.

Will they automatically receive gold once they fly their 4 QF flights or do you have to do the QF flights before earning the SCs?

They will receive the usual points & SC for flying the KUPPs based on their QF tier status of NB but they won't actually tick over to SG until they have flown the eligible QF or JQ flights so there's every chance they will jump directly from NB to SG.

Thanks! Exactly what I was hoping....

A couple of things to note is that if they had the runs on the board first by completing the 4 QF or JQ flights prior to doing the KUPPS they would:

a) receive the PS kit in the form of Q bag tags & guest pass to the QP as they go up the ladder then the SG one shortly thereafter.

b) also as they accrue the points & SC & attain PS then SG they will earn the status bonus of 50% and 75% respectively.

As ozbeachbabe notes, it would be better to start the journey with the 4 squiggles (QF sectors) if possible.

Instant upgrade to first class American Airlines fares. They're a very cost effective way of earning status credits, and for certain destinations can be a similar price to economy tickets.

As an aside, I'd like to stop the kids earning status for a few months, so they'll still be gold for a RTW trip the following year without me. Given that they don't get lounge access as minors, can they guest in an adult (their mother) to gain lounge access?

Read our AFF credit card guides and start earning more points now.

thanks...I'll have a look but I guess I can't use QFF points on these ??

No but you'll earn plenty.

I would shell out the bucks & buy a KUPP ticket as they are very affordable then use the points for JASA redemption tickets as purchasing J tickets at full value would not normally be something you would do.

I'd find out when the boys' membership year end is as you may find you can kill two birds with one stone ie get their Gold Wings doing the KUPP run with you then guesting their mother into lounges on their RTW trip.

Potential brownie points earning never goes astray even for former SWMBO's!
:p
