More syntax than grammar.Re: The totally off-topic thread
Lose/loose & loser/looser is one of my pet peeves when it comes to grammar.
How can people be so ignorant (in its real sense?Re: The totally off-topic thread
I was trying to think of the other one that annoyed me. And you have nailed it. Thanks.
Correct.Re: The totally off-topic thread
I thought we weren't supposed to start sentences with "And"?
Not sure why you are replying to a post over 5 years old, but anyhoo!More syntax than grammar.
Even Coles and Woolworths get this right.Re: The totally off-topic thread
Stationary is an adjective so it is spelt with an "a".

It is not a style manual, but correct grammarRe: The totally off-topic thread
I think you have swallowed a Style Manual , but not many people know what they are, or how to use one.
Why on earth are you complaining, Madam? Not sure why you are replying to a post over 5 years old, but anyhoo!
Grammar has many components, syntax being one of them.
Well said.Re: The totally off-topic thread
I think the easy way is to forget 'should of' and just use 'should have', in its place. (Note no apostrophe in 'its').
(Edit) Sorry for reiterating, that which has already been iterated, but I didn't read to the end of the thread before my original iteration.
It sounds as though we all had grammar drummed into us! Spelling too was very important. I recall one of my teachers had a list she called ' demon words' with all kinds of little rhymes and sayings to help remember. You use stationAry when a cAr is stopped, and stationEry to describe papEr. I'm so tempted to walk around with a couple of Textas to make running corrections. You can also find some pretty amusing mistakes on menus.Well said.
Never underestimate the power of a steel ruler in the hands of Sister Margaret Mary to inculcate the rules of grammar!Well, I attribute my finely honed linguistic, oral and and written communication skills to the grace of God and the rigors of a catholic education... those nuns were guns at teaching the basics and leaving no child behind.... they just dont make educators like that anymore...sadly
... or just &cWhat is it with people not understanding the abbreviation of etcétéra? It isn’t. Ect it’s etc. Sheesh how easy does it need to be?
