Grammar Discussions

Staged on ABC.

David Tennant. “What’s the collective nouns for Garden Gnomes?”
Michael Sheen “A violation?”

David Tennant. “What’s the collective nouns for electronics into an extension lead?”
Michael Sheen “A gamble?”

The ABC have amended their story (another pet hate of mine is people who spell it ammend) Someone needs to know the difference between crocheted and crotched :p

Who knows where those Slovenian lace doilies were kept.

Sure!! Let's change it to "Currently, you have no upcoming flights".

Is there a button that says "You've got mail"?

Very tricky to interpret at speed. Am I about to buy a container
  • last used to hold pet food?
  • made from actual recycled pet food?
  • made from recycled plastic? or, maybe even:
  • that has been converted from a disused cat into a dog?
Yipes. I think I'll buy the induction cooker instead.

I thought PET being in block letters made the description straight forward.
What was more confusing is what you're doing with the induction cooker.

Technically you'd be right, but the two other pedants in the household also thought it was confusing at a fast read. The copy-writer could easily have rearranged the word sequence to be unambiguous, and we thought that was amusing.

The induction cooker is another item in this week's cattledog, being the intended purchase on Saturday. 🙃👌 You just never know when someone might be induced to cook! [PS: on rereading, I found and fixed a typo in the last sentence of the original post. **sigh**].

So is AMEX allowed or not? Seems rather poorly worded. Given you can only submit the application by post (and not in person) I'm not sure why it says "Visa or MasterCard - AMEX only available if lodging by mail".

Does that mean you can do Visa, MC or AMEX? Although, given the fees are shown in AUD I'd better use a no-ForEx fees card anyway, which of course would not be an AMEX.

Ah yes, I've read a couple of articles from this writer.

But I did go to a grammar school in the UK, so I would know about these kinds of things.
