Agree it’s a lovely story. Hate to break it to you: it seems not to be true! However, the truth is arguably more striking than the myth. The Government Code & Cypher School (Bletchley Park) recruited a wide range of experts in various fields because of a realisation that the best minds for decrypting Enigma etc would not be limited to specialists in maths and languages. Tandy was consciously (not mistakenly) selected as a candidate and he did some excellent work there, some of which made use of his marine botany expertise. I was walking the aisles of my local Bunnings this week, and spotted typos that I must have walked past numerous times.

The aisle was labeled:

Artifical Flowers
Trolleys and carts
Artifical Turf
Wheelbarrows
Numers and Letters

Good thing this is the right aisle to fix them!
