Generally its pretty easy to criticise Qantas and berate them for poor service or moody staff. I want to congratulate them on lifting there game in the past few weeks, to the point where I actually wrote a formal thank you on there feedback website and that's a first for me.

I fly a bit - about 300sc a month on Dom Why. With that I consider myself a frequent flyer and able to judge better than most the good and bad of the airlines of OZ.

In the last month I have had 3 great surprises by Qantas staff and I wanted to share them with you all.

1- Opup at the J lounge Brisbane to Sydney
2- Missed flight that SYD J lounge staff sorted to next flight with a smile at no extra cost to me
3- QF575 to Perth yesterday, I was greeted and treated by the team like I was a God. The best feeling you can get as a FF. I was in 23a and spent a fair bit of time chatting with the crew - who by chance where all a bit older and less pretentious than the beautiful blondes floating around on some other flights.

With much of the discussion leaning towards negativity I wanted to share my positive story for you all to read........

Cheers

Andrew - WP and soon to be WP1

I have also received great service lately in the TSV QP of all places, where the angel behind the counter gave me recommendations and directions to somewhere I could have lunch in town, before changing my flight to an earlier one for when I got back, all with a smile. Unfortunately I’m not very perceptive, so never got her name and can’t mention it in a thank you email :(

BTW, with 300SC a month you’ll just scrape though! Hopefully it’ll be worth it.

I have to agree with the OP. My QF flights this year have been uniformly pleasant, with great service from check-in to arrival. I was particularly grateful to the attention I got on a flight when my asthma was playing up a bit.

Agree, but with 1 or 2 OS J's thrown in 4000SC's will be just normal flying and not chasing any SC's. My 4yo is dieing to get on a " daddy flight" so I'll be doing some extra's with him by my side. Do they still let the kiddies meet the pilot these days???

When you have arrived they should, but not in the air.

I've had my daughter in the coughpit once we were parked, it's usually never a problem!

I also agree with OP.

Have clocked up ~ 600SC in first quarter, and have noticed significant improvements.

I try and notice the outstanding crew or desk agent's name in each instance, and post a thank you on Twitter and/or through qantas.com. It's nice to see that others are noticing the efforts QF are going to also.

Thanks Qantas!

Flown about 1000SC in the 2012 calender year so far and have only noticed downgrades in overall service from QF. No Op-Up's since WP1 came into being (one every month or two prior to that) and row 23 access severely limited at T-80.

On board service has not changed noticeably except when you do get the platinum welcome, they do not even try to offer a newspaper etc like they used to do.

After reading some of the things here on AFF, I am being to wonder if I have offended someone at QF and I have been blacklisted as I have never received the service noted by others.

I've only ever had 2 op-ups and it's something I don't ever expect to happen..

I've been offered a paper on most flights lately, but i have noticed the manner of the crew is a lot better.. almost that they are proud to be working for the Roo...

Yes I really agree with the OP too. The last few months have been great. Not so much op-ups but the service level, particularly to change flights or replace missed ones, and friendliness of staff has been much appreciated.

I dunno......

I have found some staff to be excellent (this was always the case), and in some cases have sent feedback to QF.

But generally, when sitting in whY I haven't felt much love for a very long time - certainly nothing like some people are reporting.

Last opup was 2010 (only ever had 2 as a WP and 1 as QC).

I've had some great experiences too and then again some not so good... The problem I still find with QF and service is consistency, it never is!

For example, I have had some great experiences in Y, absolutely fantastic experiences in PE, and more than often dismal in J... shouldn't it be the other way round?

I recently had a not so good experience flying QF J International, basically got on the plane sat down, no hello's no welcome on board, champagne just given to us hastily.
Take off, menu given to us, food given to us with a drink, then rest of the flight sat there with no attention to us or anyone in the J cabin actually, no refill drink cart etc., they were just in the galley chatting and serving us only when we buzzed.
Gave feedback via email and just got a standard cough reply, "Thanks for your feedback, we always strive to improve blah blah"

Though a year or so ago, flew A380 PE and it was the best flying experience ever, greeting from CSM, staff remembering everyones name throughout flight, asking us by name if we wanted our wine choice again refilled constantly throughout the flight.

This is what I mean about consistency, you would expect at least a basic level of good service/friendliness in any cabin you fly, but when you see good service in lower classes and abysmal service in higher paying classes you begin to wonder why you are paying this high $$ in the first place.

Finished my final flights today to get WP, now for the double SC to post! After doing the Hobart Express from CAN today, this is what I experienced having flown 2 sectors on Virgin (CAN-MEL-HBA) and the other 2 on Qantas (HBA-SYD-CAN). Mind you, this is from someone in their 20s who self funds their travel. All were in J.

- Although some people complain about QF flight attendants being older, I kind of feel that being more experienced, the service element of the job comes easily to them. Its very easy for them to be able to engage with you while they are undertaking a meal service or during other service flows. Virgin crew aim to please and are better to look at, but lack a certain finesse
- The Qantas meal service in Business is far superior to Virgins. Perhaps it was the particular crew, but I find that in J, the Qantas crew are always offering more wine, coffee/tea and so on, while Virgin staff tend to walk through the cabin in order to be 'flagged' down rather than proactively offering you drinks or snacks.
- I find Qantas J seats more comfortable on the 737-800 than Virgins. The leather might be slicker on DJ, but the foot rest and cloth material on QF allow me to completely sink into the chair like a well worn armchair. (side note, Virgin's older planes without BSI look awkward with the new seats IMHO).
- Have not yet had a terrible flight or had a flight attendant with bad attitude in the last month on QF (10 J class flights). All were friendly and personable.
- QF really needs to learn how to do Priority Boarding like DJ do...
- Much prefer QP over Virgin Lounge (food and comfort of seats).
- Both need to update their IFE...

I think we're very lucky to have two very good full service (or close to full service) airlines in Australia. Amen its not a race to the bottom like it is in the states.

Good to see that someone is being looked after by Qantas.

Consistency across the board would be nice and so would on time departures and arrivals....

Last week from Sydney we had two boarding passes to do the double status credits long cut thru Melbourne to Perth using the Kiosk ticket machine. Had to ask which one to use at the baggage dispatch point....SYD- MEL and that was it. Our flights were smooth and quiet and the service was pretty good. Mrscove was surveyed so she told QF that.
The double status credits offer that I received is the only thing that is annoying her at the moment seeing I am two thirds back to Platinum in a month and a half since my year rolled over.
I felt the staff on our recent flights are trying to give us a great flying experience.
