GST Refund

Things can also get lost whilst overseas. Travellers risk. ;)

Lined up tonight in TRS queue - what an eye opener. I filled in documentation online and printed out claim - arrive at airport and 'Online Queue' in operable - lumped in with the masses. Have you guys seen the procedure some people go through" I saw people virtually emptying a full size roller board stuffed to brim - literally dozens of items - OMG - it would want to be a reasonable sum to claim back to make it worthwhile.

trixy - good news - claimed the GST refund at 10pm on Feb 3 and refund appeared in my account Feb 4 - and I am still 'on the loose' - but again tks for your considerate and helpful post.

That's just wonderful, Mr. Elite. Degree of difficulty on getting a refund there would be around 0/10. Then there's the rest of your magnificent saga, that has so little applicability to the rest of us that I really couldn't understand why you bothered... apart, of course, from the repeated "Look at me!" theme.

Seeking some advice here as have never claimed GST refund before:
  1. If item is over AD1,000 refund form must be completed and presented at airport and item in question presented for inspection - is that correct?
  2. Once goods 'exported' and inadvertently not handed over to 'giftee' what are peoples experiences of checks / inspections on return?
  3. Should said item be removed from original packaging and loaded into checked luggage rather then in hand luggage?
TIA - after a number of meetings involving bucket loads of encouragement from infinity and boomy I have decided to embark on 'a life of crime'!
Surely most things (aside from otherwise excisable booze) would be business expenses for your mob - thereby introducing such purchases to the world of input tax credits ...

Indeed they are - indeed such introductions are made. ;)

Cruiser, please ignore these negative comments.
There are many of us who enjoy and look forward to your posts, please keep them coming :)

trixydoza, his posts may have no applicability to you, but that doesn't mean others don't learn from and enjoy them.

Haters Gonna Hate!

Having purchased the Bose QC35 I'm expecting to recover the GST on Wed at SYD departure. I'll of course have the goods for the flight and receipt. I'm hoping the refund process will be quick so that I can go up to QF lounge. With all the upgrades happening in T1, where is the refund counter?

Once you're "airside" it's off to the right as you walk towards the big temporary wall: it is (or was in Mar 2016) clearly signposted. I'll be there Monday and can verify/report its location.

DO use the TRS app - your visit to the TRS counter will take only about 5 minutes and the queue is usually shorter or moves oh so much faster. Just hope there isn't a China Southern or Eastern departure at the same time as your departure 'cos then timings "go to hell in a handbasket".

That's really good advice. Ty.
Downloaded app and completed claim.

The ABN on Bose receipt was not clear for all numbers but after google search I was able to match it.

All the shops are now open. As I said, once through security turn right - in the background under the word FREE there's a passageway.

Go through the passageway and turn right:

At 2.30pm Monday, I was the only person in the app line, with probably 30 people in the non-app queue. In-n-out in three minutes.

HTH.

I'll be flying out of SYD next Monday and have today registered my Bose QC35s and a Canon lens I bought a couple of weeks ago on the TRS website and have printed out the TRS Claim Code. For the lens, which was over $1000, the receipt shows my first name as Ken but my name as on my passport is Kenneth. From anyone else's experience, is that likely to be an issue and should I go back to the shop and ask them to reissue the receipt showing Kenneth? The receipt from the Bose shop for the QC35s does show Kenneth and my address is on both receipts.

On the Tax Back For Travellers TRS brochure that I downloaded it says:
"Tax invoices for $1,000 or more must also show the name and address of the purchaser."

I tried to phone the TRS office but they are not taking phone calls so I emailed them today to ask this question and had this automatic reply:

"Thank you for emailing the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS). Please be advised that we currently have a significant backlog in emails. We will respond to your email as soon as possible, however the delay is currently about 60 days. Please only send your enquiry once."

60 days to reply to an email! I thought I may get a reply today or tomorrow.

I wouldn't worry about that minor difference. Just like it doesn't matter about the address (I have stuff shipped to both my work and my son's work address).
You don't have to print the claim code - just hand thr TRS officer your phone with the app open.

any updates on the TRS?
We bought 2 items with a total of $1532.00. 1 purchase of $879 and the other $653.
If we make a claim on the way out of oz, as they are under 1800 for both of us, do we need to declare on the way back 7 days later?

Go to the TRS web site and apply online, easy peasy. My wife just went out thru Perth a week ago and we did it that way, and the Customs man said hers was the easiest he had all day. I unpacked the iPod pro and it's accessories into a small pouch to lighten the load. Rules about coming back home there in full as well.

I don't really understand your comment about coming back home mate.
We have never been OS yet. Won't be able to say that after Saturday lol Unless you call Kangaroo Island OS hahaha
