the true test now is seeing whether or not they've sold the farm with the reductions in standards and schedules and whether not customers return

It is good that QF has returned to profit. Will it be long term? I can't answer that.

Many jobs have gone to enable this result, as a number of posters have said. Could it have been done differently to avoid the job losses? I don't know that either.

Hopefully QF can now enjoy some growth and further positive results.

Qantas management just can´t win can they? If they run at a loss they get lambasted, if they reduce staff and manage to run the airline at a profit then they are evil.

If you were running an airline perfectly, and still made losses because of factors outside your control, people might understand if you needed to sack staff.

But there were airlines making profits at the same time QF was making a loss. And some of that loss was probably due to some questionable decisions.

Then you sack a whole bunch of staff, cut services, downgrade passengers and refund only a fraction of what they're due... and then post your half yearly results and expect what? A medal?

This shouldn't be a game of 'win-some, lose some' when people's jobs are on the line.

Unfortunately some people are going to think that Joyce turned it all around and deserves a salary increase and huge bonus.

They could have turned it all around just on the fuel price alone.

They got lucky. Fuel price is on the way back up. Luck will end soon no doubt.

Add to this their disingenuous customer "enhancements" in the true QF meaning of same, and the swathes of customers who have already given up on them, and the long term effects of all this will be seen.

Brand damage = death by a thousand cuts.

Actually I am quite happy that they have managed to save the airline for now. Cutting staff and services is obviously painful, but IMHO was a necessary evil at this point.

Lucky?? As I said, in the eyes of some they can never do the right thing.

¨Swathes of customers¨? If you only read the Qantas bashing threads I could understand that perception. But if you read threads on other airlines you can get the same impression for any airline. Are ¨swathes of customers¨ abandoning air travel in general?? I suspect not.

I also suspect that the reason that there are such emotional rants against QF is because even the most vocal anti-QF people know deep down that the other airlines are no better.

Yes, QF peeve me too in some things (No 1 is obscene co-pays for FF ticket redemptions), but I understand it is a bloody difficult game they are in, and for a Western airline to not bleed is hard yakka.

Indeed, people lost their jobs for this media release to be a positive number.

Cut cost = better return.

Simple stuff, just about every profitable airline/business has worked this out!

Um did you actually read the full results? The benefits from lower fuel costs were only $33mil, not even 10% of the total profit.
