Handgun showing in X-ray today

Certainly sounds like a good system for keeping everyone alert......

I must say though that what impresses me most is that the OP could tell from an X-Ray that the pistol was a 9mm!

(As opposed to a 357 SIG or a 40 S&W or a 45 etc)

Sorry, this ol' target shooter couldn't resist!!!:mrgreen::mrgreen:

I was thinking this myself

Shhh don't tell! I took a BB gun through to PNG from NZ at Christmas. Declared it at Auckland airport, who told me that even though I checked it, it couldn't go through, then they checked with security say who said it was OK.

got to POM and got chosen to go through baggage screening, my bags went through the X-ray machine, the BB pistol (metal) was sitting on the top of the bag and would have looked like a real pistol going through the scanner.

retrieved my passport and left, shaking my head...

Its great for shooting down Mango's :)

I've also accidentally gone through security at departures (before checkin) with a small can of pepper spray attached to my keys. Domestic airport here has a sign that states firearms mustn't be carried onboard... Lol

The feature everyone is referring to here is Threat Image Projection.

In Australia at least, operators are required to identify 'TIPs', maintaining a certain success rate. Dropping below this rate requires retraining, and if the problem persists, results in termination.

I first noticed the feature when I had (only) my car keys in one of the x-ray bins, but I could see that the screen was also showing a handgun. The screener said something like "well, that one was easy", and being the only person in line, I asked a few questions about it. ;) If they believe they are seeing a TIP image, they must indicate this to the software by pressing a button on their control pad. If they are correct, the 'fake' image disappears, and they are supposed to re-check the entire image for threats before proceeding.

If you're curious, you'll find more details here: Rapiscan Threat Image Projection | Rapiscan Systems :)

Here is a screengrab that is available to the general public on the Rapiscan website:

Thanks for the insight into these things.

Does the computer put the red box around the questionable item automatically?

Clearly set up by a non-shooter..... Why else is the slide locked back? Silly way to transport a pistol....

Not important in the greater scheme of things... but stands out nonetheless....

I've never seen it do that on my own bags (or empty tray :p)... it's always appeared as part of the image, and when the screener has detected it, it just vanishes. (I seem to also be the type to watch the screen until I get my bag!)

The error message shown at the top of the image says 'You have not correctly identified a fictional GUN threat', so I imagine the box is only there because the software is pointing our their failure. It would kind of defeat the purpose otherwise! :)

Walking through PER security yesterday afternoon and was telling mum about the system... Guy behind us put his bag through x-ray. As it comes out he gets asked if he has a knife in there? I thought it might be the system.. Turns out it was real! Then as we were entering the QP he storms in pushes in front of the couple chatting to the lady at the front desk and then continues to storm in.. Attendant was not impressed!

Guy said he knew it was in there when security asked him.. Must have thought he would get through?

Anyway.. I will keep a look out for a fake one! :)

If clear, slide forward, hammer down, Holster.

(Shooting an IPSC match tomorrow... how appropriate!)

Yes I've seen it from time to time. But why do they have to make it so obvious?

OT: Am I the only one who always likes looking at the X-ray screen to see what my gadgets look like on the inside?

Never seen it with my bags, interesting t see how they keep the staff alert.

OT:I do as well, also helps me know where things are I may have forgotten.

They don't go to any effort to MAKE it obvious... it just IS.

Coming home from a big match in NZ this year the screener was not at all busy... and as I was chatting to him he asked if I wanted to see the screen... I leapt at the chance and was staggered at just how "bright" and clear the image of the pistol was... as it was in a hard shell suitcase.. and inside a hard shell pistol case as well....

The ammo BTW showed so clearly too that a quick glance was enough to determine live ammo from spent cases....

Thought it was all very "cool" indeed...
