Has anyone had success with the call-up "Marginal" xASA's?

Re: Best Status Run Options - A quick overview!

I'm in Cairns lounge after checking in for Cairns - Sydney - Brisbane that I booked with a JASA. Got a very strange look from the lady at check in when I said I was going to Brisbane via Sydney.

A few years back I flew FRA-xAMM-CDG, almost 4,000 miles versus 280 miles FRA-CDG direct. I don't ever want to do that again.

Re: MASA (INT) fare rules - post June 26th

...
After 3 attempts, I had met a CSR who stated my INT inbound MASA (LAX SYD) would be a fully refundable / changeable fare (5,000 pts cancellation fee applies) and would be prepared to put those fare rules into the "Comments" section of the booking for future reference.
...
That's very strange quoting 5000 point fee ... (more later)

If you look the booking up on line the basic fare rules are often shown (against each segment), may be duplicated.

Here's the fare rules of a JASA I have for LAX-MEL: Bookings - Fare Types: US - AU Bus

[TH="bgcolor: #660000, align: left"] Business[/TH]
Cancellations (including no show)

  • Before Departure:
    • Fully refundable
  • After Departure:
    • The refund will be the difference (if any) between the fare paid and the applicable fare for the journey travelled.
  • This fare may be used as a credit towards the payment of an equal or higher Qantas fare. The ticketed flight reservation must be cancelled prior to ticketed flight departure time. If the ticketed flight reservation is not cancelled prior to the ticketed flight departure time, this will constitute a 'No Show' requiring application of the cancellation fee, if any. Reservation for the new itinerary must be made and the ticket exchanged no later than 1 year from original ticket issue date. Fare conditions of the new Qantas fare must be met and the reissue fee applies when the ticket is reissued. If the new fare is cancelled, the original fare cancellation conditions will apply.
  • Note: If this fare is combined with another fare the most restrictive cancellation conditions apply.
  • Customers who purchase a ticket in the United States for travel on Qantas may cancel their reservations/refund ticket without charge within 24 hours of ticketing when purchase is one week or more prior to departure of the first flight in the itinerary.

As I suspect there really is no 5K fee - "Fully Refundable" means exactly that.

I suspect the CSR was just saying it with no real cause other than confusing Classics with ASA's.

It's a shame you had such entered into the rules as it is an indication you agreed to that, even though they are not part of them.

I have had the same funny look doing the same thing but in Y, booked it that way not only because of the credits etc but I knew the CNS SYD flight was not busy while the BNE bound plane was, and I had a colleague travelling with me, it was a very comfortable flight.

Serfty

By the time she mentioned the 5K penalty, it was already 25 min into the (4th) call.

So, yes, I was at the "it does not matter anymore" stage.

To her credit, she proposed to check with the supervisor on that penalty fee but I declined another hold !

Did you look up the rules online (post booking)?

Did you look up the rules online (post booking)?

How do I do that ?

There is no "rules" section in MMB with that booking.

The e-ticket does state "ASA rules apply".

Thanks

Does it have "Fare Conditions" when you look at MMB? Like the image below?

That's what my post-online-withdrawal JASA bookings look like, too. And clicking on "Business" (under Travel Class) just gives a generic explanation, not terms & conditions.

My older ones look like Tony Hancock's.

Mine is a pre online withdrawal too.

Re: MASA (INT) fare rules - post June 26th

My pre-MASA process bookings for ASAs show the column for Fare Conditions, as in TH's post above.
No such column in my post-MASA process bookings. Just the generic T&C link.

Re: MASA (INT) fare rules - post June 26th

Hi Gang - excuse the stock post intro, however "I'm not sure the best place to put this, and hoping it's OK here!"

I'm trying to ascertain whether there is value in booking a couple of (Y)ASAs for SWMBO and I between SYD-MEL and return, as opposed to just booking the Classic Awards. I can get 2 x return Classics for total 32,000 points and $140. Haven't yet called up for the ASA tax on the same seats, and wondered if anyone had any experience with these in whY and how taxes generally compare to the Classics. I don't really have the points to burn on the J version, and I'm not really after SCs in this instance, just reasonable value. Thanks in advance!

Cheers.

In short, YASAs are not good value. I would stick to a classic award unless you are absolutely desperate for the SCs, in which case check the current Sale/Red eDeal prices as these will most likely be cheaper than a YASA.

I agree, the YASAs tend to be at a starting point close to the JASAs in point value if there is award availability.

Re: MASA (INT) fare rules - post June 26th

Thank you both - will stick with the Classics I think. 8,000 points and $35 each [per flight] is OK... best I can get in whY on the same days I'm needing to travel in Sale or Red eDeals is more like $650 all up! There's cheaper on the orange cancer, but no.

Cheers.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Will this work if the seat I'm looking at booking has Classic Award availability on a Cathay Pacific flight? Currently showing as 65,000 points J class. A check in flightstats shows the availability in J as J/9 C/9 I/9 D/9. Thx!

ASAs only apply to QF and JQ when it comes to earning points etc.

Ok. So I might as well do the Classic award if the only reason to do ASA is SC and points? Settled that for me then. :)

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Booked a domestic single sector JASA last night on the phone

Took less than 2 mins and the rep knew exactly what she was doing

Made the comment that "I only make these bookings for Platinum members, they are the only ones that know about the ASA's"

Hmmmmm

Hmm. That sounds ominous for this lowly silver.
