A week or so ago I replied quite positively to the question“Has Qantas got its mojo back?”.
Having just completed LAX-BNE-MEL-SYD in J, let’s see if my answer still holds up:
LAX-BNE. Reconfigured747, upper deck. Comfortable flight dueto MkII bed; one FA very affable, others, both in my cabin and the couple I ran into when visiting downstairs appeared to want to be somewhere else. No smiles, little passenger engagement; duties performed competently but no warmth (perhaps forgivable at the end of a long haul, but not at the start). No sign of, or greeting from, the FlightService Director (usually comes round with the arrival cards). Loss of one toilet in upper deck with reconfig caused a major jam before breakfast. Meals good (incl advance menu selection), wine good. ‘Priority’ bag emerged on belt about themiddle of the pack. 6/10
BNE-MEL. Brand new737. Great crew, great aircraft. Sim-leather J seats, seat back screen for IFEand good selection of programs. Decentmeal (dinner) and wines. Negative: If you are listening to the IFE, and a PA comes on, you’ll get your head fairly blasted off. The PA comes on at full volume! I mentioned this to the senior FA who said they were aware of the issue and said (I think joking) “it’s to makesure we get every one’s attention” (!) ‘Priority’ bag emerged on the belt about 1/3 into the unload. 8/10 (no points deducted for bag – given up expecting any priority delivery)
MEL-SYD. Venerable767. Self check-in-with-bag system stillabominable. In the air - great crew, decent meal (lunch), OK wines. Can’t do much with the aircraft; it’s a busy, short sector, so no big deal. ‘Priority’ bag emerged on the belt towards the end. 7/10
Summary:
QFi: absolutelynothing special compared to competitors. Better (MkII) beds, but some resulting inconveniences. Air crews badly need to take the customer service lessons their domestic counterparts are apparently taking. Current performances not sustainable.
QFd: really good. Some ageing aircraft issues, but if the crewis energised, as they are, you don’t notice the hardware defects (where present) so much.
So has Qantas got its mojo back? Domestic, yes. International – no, or not yet.
