Hi Guys, need some help as never had the need to do this.

But basically I found some a cheap fare from Kuala Lumpur to Spain (flying Qatar). I need to get myself to KL. I know there is some rule that if there are flights booked under the same partner e.g. OneWorld in this case, that If I bought the Perth to KL return leg. I could tell during check-in that instead I would like the luggage to go straight from Perth to Spain. And at times, they can also generate me the Boarding Pass? Sometimes I understand I may need to pick it up in KLIA as well. But ultimately luggage will go to final destination, and I wouldn't need to leave airside.

Is my understanding correct, that if its under the same partner airline, I could book 2 tickets and get luggage routed to final destination. Great if you can advise if I'm on the right track or not. thank you!

It will be checked through to the final destination.

Here is the l’âge you are looking for: Malaysia Airlines Check-In: Your Guide to Hassle-Free Check-In Process

Scroll right down to ‘how to check in’ and expand the section on ‘separate tickets’.

Nite that in reverse, MH say the oneworld partner may not provide through check in to MH. So perhaps google QR through bag checkin on separate tickets.

You’re looking for luggage interline partners and rules. QF are funny about interlining, SQ will interline luggage with any man and their dog.

I think the Q is about adding in the extra PER-KUL leg and getting the luggage interlined

That’s right. The link I provided is from MH, it says if you buy PER-KUL on MH they will interline to QR.

However, assuming the OP is coming back as well, MH warns QR may not have the same policy when checking in in Spain. So best to check.

Hi All, thanks MEL_Traveller for answering the question. I think you have given me exactly the answer I needed. And you made the correct assumption on the return. Basically:

Perth to KL (MAS), KL to Spain (QF) - Should be good to go based on the article.
Spain to KL (QF), and KL to Perth (MAS) - 50/50. Please check.

I love this forum :)

Interlining bags on separate reservations varies a lot. No set rules.
For example AirNZ, AA & BA will never interline, even to themselves.
QF Qantas will interline QF to QF, QF to EK and QF to a OW airline where a reward flight is involved.
MH will interline bags on separate OW reservations (source FT Malaysia Airlines Official Policy on Checking bags on separate tickets
QR Qatar does interline on separate reservations (from FT threads)

If you have process immigration & customs it can be different.
But be prepared for bag interlining not to happen. Have a plan.

On separate tickets all the risk is with you. If the first flight is late and you no show the 2nd flight that is your problem.
No guarantee the 1st airline will checkin - print the 2nd airlines boarding pass.
The first airline will check you are admissible (immigration) to where they are taking you. Even if you (hope) to do an airside transfer. Your next destination is of no interest to them.

Agreed
My personal rule on separate tickets is minimum 5hrs gap, and ideally overnight stay.

I have been fortunate on shorter connections a couple of times.
