Have you had anything stolen on a flight?

I was on BA 12 a few days ago and woke up to find my laptop missing. I was in 62K (upper deck, window), and the laptop was in the side storage area next to the window. I couldn't believe that it was stolen so thought I must have left it somewhere (despite my general paranoia when it comes to my laptop). However, the security check at SIN is next to the gates, so any items left behind are brought to the door of the plane.

I guess it's possible that someone took it (unlikely as it may seem) as I was very tired and took a sleeping pill. Combined with earplugs, eye shades, dim lighting, the general noise level of a 747, and an overnight flight where basically everyone in business class is asleep I guess it is plausible. I still don't see how it could be done without the FA seeing as there is usually one sitting at the top of the stairs - so still question whether that's what happened.

At the time, I thought I may have left it behind at SIN - it was the flight attendant who pointed out that that was unlikely based on the procedures they have to deal with stuff left behind at the security checkpoint. It was only after I'd considered the possibilities that I came to the view that it may have been stolen.

You know you can still make a comlaint that it was stolen.

Would not be hard for Police to get hold of the manifest and see if there is any persons of interest who were on board or sitting near to you.

If it is big they could also check the vision of people entering through customs so it might show someone carrying it.

Probably won't get you your laptop back but if it is something that is happening often they should be aware of it.

That is if you were flying into Australia, not onwards from Singapore.

Why wouldn't a security guard at SIN just keep it? Perhaps he wasn't seen by anyone, or had a mate and they agreed to split the $$. Simplest explanation is usually correct ... you probs left it behind.

OT: never had anything of mine touched or go missing on a flight ... and that's a decade of flying all over the world. Like you, I go for sensory depravation on the over night runs also.

my first thought was that it might have slid down the aircraft during take-off? IIRC the bins on the upper deck aren't always compartmentalised... sometimes things can slide down a couple of rows?

I've heard stories of wallets and other valuables being stolen, crew hand manifest over to police who looked into names and find one passenger with a history of theft, police rocked up to their house and catching them with the stolen goods.

The vast majority of all thefts are opportunistic and the police searching names on a passenger manifest would have incredibly low odds of a successful arrest.

You really need to work your brain hard and try to remember if you actually had the laptop on board at all.

62K is the Emergency Exit so it could not have slid far, I started locking my cary on after reading some stories about stuff going missing on planes.

Before going to sleep I put my valuables in my carry on and lock it (it's a hard shell bag with a code lock). I've never had anything stolen

About 5 years ago between on VN J between SIN and SGN I woke up to find a gent with his hand inside my carryon duffel which was on the empty seat next to me. I impolitely inquired as to what he was doing, notified the crew and upon landing was met at the gate by airport police who held the man, took a statement and asked me to double check nothing was missing. Thankfully nothing was taken but the sheer brazenness of this gent has stuck with me ever since.

I have never had anything stolen in flight.

I did lose a mobile phone though from my jacket pocket in October 2011 on a TG BKK-SYD flight in business and noticed it as I was about to deplane. It may have fallen out in the seat or it could have fallen out just as I was getting ready to go to the airport the night before. My jacket did fall and most things fell out of the pocket.

My iPad was stolen from the Perth Qantas Club this morning.

I used a shower suite and left the iPad sitting next to the basin, updating apps. I left without it and didn't realise until three hours later. I phoned the lounge but nothing had been handed in.
