Have you had to change/cancel travel due to COVID-19 (involuntarily or voluntarily)?

I thought I would start a thread as a resource for AFFers who have changed or cancelled travel plans directly or indirectly due to 2019 n-CoV.
  • Did the airline/cruise company cancelling or change your flight/cruise? Or, did you proactively or reactively cancel or change it on your own (and why?).
  • Did they notify you directly, or did you discover it on your own?
  • What was your original plan, and what was the revised plan?
  • What was your experience like?
  • Did you go through any travel insurance claim process, and how was that part of it?

For the record, part of my role at work is to monitor medical related issues, filter out mis/disinformation, and brief other staff using only verified facts from trusted sources, so I am not one to buy into sensationalism or hysteria. BUT, I am also an advocate of forward planning and monitoring situations that could affect travel plans.

To start it off…. We have begun voluntarily changing (or making back up plans for) our upcoming holiday SYD-(+/- SIN)-LAX-SJO-LAX-HNL-LNY-HNL-SYD

We are booked to the USA via SIN on SQ in a few weeks (F Saver Reward Booking). A few things caused us to start making contingency plans on getting to the USA including:
  • Reading posts from Buttermilk Chicken regarding her RTW flight being disrupted between HKK and CEB
  • Member Pushka raising a good point if Singapore will be next.
  • Monitoring the World Health Organisations surveillance on n-CoV (as part of my responsibilities at work). Singapore confirmed infections were 28 on 5 Feb, 40 on 8 Feb, and 43 on 9 Feb. Several of these cases were human-to-human contact, with no recent travel to China.
  • Bloomberg’s article this morning HERE, which discussed the spread of the virus from a conference attendee in Singapore, via a resort in France, to people in France, Spain, and the UK.

We contacted SQ, to discuss the options of alternative carriers, to which there were no available flights. The agent was very friendly, and said she understood the desire to rebook and avoid an Asia transit, but she said until official bans are in place, there were no options, but “we will offer options if Singapore becomes affected by travel bans”.

We began searching other options. We contacted VFF, who found one seat on DL SYD-LAX in W, and one seat on VA in J SYD-BNE-LAX. No other business or premium reward seats (except any seat) were available +/- 1 day of our desired travel (with pre-booked hotels, cars, and other flights to South America, and Hawaii). We will keep looking for another J seat on same day, and hopefully two on the same flight to free up closer to the date.

We have left our SQ bookings as is for now, and will cancel either that booking of the DL/VA booking closer to the date as thing develop.

Overall Experience:
  • Wait times on the phone are obviously a bit longer, but I’ve not been on hold longer than 15 minutes with either VA or SQ.
  • Staff at both SQ and VA call centres have been friendly, empathetic, and helpful in searching, but have no/limited availability and flexibility in voluntary changes so far.

Well, time for a SITREP:
I'm sitting in Yas Mall about 3Km from AUH and only about 5% of people wearing masks. Seems sufficiently busy. But won't be tomorrow because apparently all of the theme parks on Yas Island are closing until a date TBA. As one of the main reasons for coming to Abu Dhabi was to visit Ferrari World (mostly for car mad Mstr Scarlett) as soon as one of the staff at our hotel mentioned the impending closure we hoofed it down here. We were planning to visit on Monday for a full day, but only three hours available now. ☹️

So, Mrs and Mstr are inside doing whatever is done inside Ferrari World and I'm cooling my heels. Even with the late entry, tickets were still full price, which at AED250 a pop and the Aussie peso almost down to 1:2 to the Dirham, would've made it a very expensive couple of hours for all of us. Hope the young fella is enjoying it!

As to travel: our next stop of Kuwait is officially cancelled. As mentioned a few pages back, we stayed airside at CMB for about 17hrs to avoid entering Sri Lanka, due to Kuwaiti restrictions at the time (first change of plans, but certainly won't be last!).
Now EY have cancelled our AUH-KWI onward flight and UL have cancelled the first leg of our return to Aus journey, KWI-CMB.

I called UL local office today and as is becoming routine with UL ground staff, they couldn't care less and told me to call someone else. Spoke to the supervisor who eventually listened to my suggestions about changing the KWI-CMB to DXB-CMB, but wanted it all in an email. Nothing back yet, but it sounded like they'd be able to make that change. So I guess we've either got an extra three days in Abu Dhabi, or more likely, will relocate to Dubai and have a look around there.

I'm also considering a slightly higher risk option of heading over for a couple of days in Bahrain as they don't have any covid19 related restrictions relevant to us (yet!). Can still get EY flights AUH-BAH and EK flights BAH-DXB to link up with the UL return to Aus flights (if they make the change). The problem really is just the pace of changes in everything covid19-related at the moment.

Anyway, that's all first world problems... I'm still on holiday; saw some amazing architecture and interesting sites, and played some spectacular golf courses in Oman. I'm playing Yas Links tomorrow which is (subject to argument) the best course in UAE and it's warm and the sun is still shining.

Should also mention our EY flight MCT-AUH yesterday only had about 15 pax (on an A320) and AUH was VERY quiet.

On, on!

Well, time for a SITREP:

On the Paris metro yesterday, I couldn't sense any thing different from usual (not that I know what usual is!). CDG this morning crowded and not many masks. Macron effectively called an emergency 2 days ago (closing schools, unis etc next week). Louvre and Versailles closing.

MAD at lunch timetoday. Completely different. Many, many masks.

LHR T4 this afternoon, as usual, a zoo. Not many masks.

Three weeks ago, not a mask to be seen in ADD. Right now, plenty - but still a minority. Ethiopia claims one case, but a reasonably reliable source tells me there are 100+. Forget the reported case numbers when it comes to the third world. And yes, the lounge here does have the lighting of a nightclub.

I have searched everything BA sent with the "e-ticket" and can't see what the cancellation fees might be, or even if the fare is cancellable (is that a word?). So it will no doubt be a long call tomorrow to tray and find out ahead of the 19/3 departure, which I will not be on.

I am overseas (Israel/Turkey/Europe) and trying to contact Qantas 'customer service' to rearrange flights from Rome etc. Was previously using Qantas app messaging/chat. 'Now' it isn't even shown as an option on the app! How I'm meant to communicate with Qantas I do not know! (All the phone credit in the world won't allow me the time it takes to get an answer if I try ringing!) If flight(s) not canx I will be deemed a 'no show' but I can't get there to take take them!!

Have you tried London and other European contacts?

Just saw this notice on BA site, so worst case is a voucher. Have to see what best case is when I can get on to them.

Just highlighting there is a thread here to post your monetary outcome once your changes are finalised..

I cannot believe that Qantas are doing this for flights booked in March when they were made once the virus was clearly an issue, but those who booked before then, months ago, get charged a change fee. What the heck?

I have QF F reward flights to US in 2 weeks that are not affected by any Qantas changes. Will they only shift to later dates if rewards are still available?

What the heck?

Reminds me of when Woolies and Coles announced that they wouldn't allow returns of hoarded items well after the hoarding had begun, but only for items purchased several days later. Whilst I agree it needed to be discouraged, I can't imagine you'd have any community backlash against it having being backdated.

My parents were able to cancel their trip to Aus with a full refund (apparently the travel agent said because their return trip had a 5 hour layover in SIN, they could cancel with full refund), so that's lucky.

There has to be availability before changing flights. Even in situations like this. There may be some leeway though.

Sounds like flights were changed significantly which allows you to cancel.

Assuming you booked directly on www.BA.com; then if you plug your details into this Finnair page (since they also use Amadeus), you should receive an email eticket from them with a lot more detail:

In that email should be the fare basis code for each segment (it may be the same for all) - if you publish the fare basis codes here, someone might be able to look it up using E/F or similar.
