Having to pay for Sydney transfer as flying Jetstar and not Qantas

I'm not sure they make the distinction at domestic security. They screen whatever is presented. Only say this because of the massive thing that was going into an xray scanner in T3 last Friday afternoon.

Edit: I doubt it would have fit into an overhead locker

But if the airline accepted it at the gate then it was deemed by them as hand luggage. :) (or maybe as has happened to me - they put it in the hold from the gate).

An air-side bus transfer, in reality, means hand luggage only (or luggage that can fit in the transfer security x-ray machines). It also means the free Sydney QF transfer could only realistically apply when checked luggage interlining is also offered.

Except this has very little to do with the govt. Besides that they "sold off" the airport to MAP. The user paying the govt is MAP. The fees that MAP charges their customers is not user pays from the govt perspective.

Govt User pays is when the govt water authority charges you to install a water meter. Or your rates include a refuse fee, that is charged to council by a state govt.

The "User Pays" fees increased the value of the property and hence the sale price by the Govt.

Don't get me wrong I am far from being a Socialist and in a health service business. I would love to have a monopoly !

A quick check on the internet and you will see that Australian Airports are some of the most expensive for Airlines and Passengers.

Not a fan of Qantas/Jetstar I was only trying to bring a different view into the reasons for the dramas with terminal transfers at Sydney,
and it is no better in Brisbane.

I wonder if we will have to pay our own security scanning fees next !!!!!

Psst - you already do, its the people that are not flying who get it for free, and country people are much more trustworthy than international travellers so they get a discount ;):

I know its in the charges but I was thinking of an extra charge - maybe a coin in the slot turnstile, or perhaps
express scanning $10, Standard $5, Saver scanning $1 but only rarely offered !

But all you're talking about is a business setting it's charges. User pays for the government involves charging those people/companies who are using the government service. At an airport that is MAP, or the airlines or etc. Not the customers. Sure the customers end up paying but that is just the usual process of any business passing it's costs. Anyway, the terminal transfer options are run by private/government enterprises, not MAP. So user pays for the airport has little to do with the cost, other than MAP passing on its costs to those other transport enterprises.

I'm a little surprised that any one has been refused QF TXFER. I often transfer both ways with no intenrational ticket as I fly QF ADL-SYD to collect or drop some one off and the QF SYD-ADL.

I just tell them, they check a boarding pass and let me through.

Never been refused - maybe a run of good luck.

With a handle "Lucky_man", you sound surprised at your good fortune...? ;)

That is allowed for the transfer. Domestic to international transfer - allowed if connecting to or from a QF flight. International to domestic - allowed if connecting to a QF flight. Both apply to you, sorry no luck involved. The OP was connecting to JQ.

I think some people are missing the point of this thread .... as I experienced similar frustration earlier this week.

We were returning from a family holiday to New Zealand and flew into Sydney from Christchurch. Interestingly, we travelled on a Qantas Frequent Flyer points booking and throughout the entire 6 flights of our trip, only one was a Qantas flight .... all the rest were Jetstar.

Nevertheless, when we arrived in Sydney our next flight to Launceston was a JQ flight from T2 and we had to pay nearly $35 for the family on the bus. If it had been a QF flight from T3 it would have been free of charge transit.

Sucks big time that you had to pay anything at all to transfer, regardless of from/to airlines. You're in the one airport FFS. SYD is disgraceful in this regard.
