Heavy duty padlocks in cabin baggage

My wife had some small (and I mean small) nail clippers confiscated at LPL airport a few years ago.

One wonders what damage you could do with them. Trim the captains toenails I wonder?

The security guy offered to mail them back to our home address for £10, which was a bit ridiculous as they only cost £1.
Same with my 75yo Auntie. The most frail, diminutive figure ever to wear the Salvation Army uniform. She was upset as they were nice with a decorative handle.

Perhaps the security guy had just watched a movie where the action hero takes out a couple of henchmen using them? The laughs would have been on them though if someone was diffusing a bomb on board and needed to cut the red wire!!

I was once stopped at CNS as I had a roll of strong 5cm wide self adhesive tape in my carryon as it could be used to bind.

@QF1, To avoid issues, put the locks in checked luggage.

A friend bought 6 (cleaned) but jagged metal pieces of a crashed WW2 aircraft to Australia from the UK, in his hand luggage, all bubble wrapped etc. to give to the relatives of the dead veterans. He had to show customs/security obviously, so had some tape to re wrap them. Got in to Aust, flew to 3 different states and delivered bits. At BNE they confiscated his tape....in case he bound someone up with it...but he was allowed to slice them open with the jagged metal if he wanted.

I’d win the thread. They confiscated my handbag hook at CBR a few years back.
@jastel and his mate's tape would go close too. But I can't say for sure you'd win, mainly because I don't know what a handbag hook is? Sounds hooky, and might have someone's eye out? If they're not wearing glasses that is.

Oooh, ooooh!
I know what a handbag hook is!
It’s just a normally short item which you put on the edge of a table or a counter, usually has a grippy rubber pad on the “foot” so it won’t slip, and which has a hook that dangles under the table/counter which you can hang your handbag on.
Just means you don’t have to have your bag on the floor where it gets dirty & is likely in the way & where you may even forget it.

It’s a tad hard to think of how you could hurt someone with one of those any worse than you could with plastic cutlery, unless you were some martial arts expert in which case you probably wouldn’t need a weapon anyway …

Spot on @Forg. And the hook itself is always blunt/rounded to avoid damaging the handbag!

We are currently on a a 2 month long railway holiday in Europe and wanted to make sure our lugggage was safe when it was on a train luggage area remote from our seat.
To achieve this I carried a heavy duty bike lock in my carry on luggage (I don't check in luggage) without any security problems in Melbourne, Perth, Singapore or London Heathrow.
