I am trying to find the least cost one way flight for a daughter to go to the UK (finally). What I am finding is that one way is usually about 75% of return trip - however she would like to stay as long as her money (and probably mine) holds out so standard return is not applicable. Timing for her to go is March 2015.

Appreciate any suggestions.

You just need to be a bit creative. You can get a very reasonably priced fare for a one way fare to England by purchasing fare out of Asia. For example via Denpasar - fly Jetstar to Denpasar (around $399 from Sydney but is available cheaper when on special) then catch a Malaysian Airline flight to London for $567.00. You may find similar routes and pricing via Singapore. Alternatively Malaysian Airlines sells a one way ticket from Singapore to London for $635 - again a cheap JQ flight through to Singapore from Melbourne is low on special $250 - making a total fare of $894.00. Or you could get a cheap fare on Scoot to Singapore then connect to Malaysian Airlines. Being young - the extra time to do a stopover should not be a problem - even if she needs a stopover in Singapore (some good hostels reasonably priced).

Thanks those are the sorts of ideas that will help a lot. She can get up to Singapore for $193 with bag on Scoot. As usual with my girls they want to take at least 2 suitcases to carry their implements and this one is no different, so effects the choices as well.

Understand the luggage thing - but not too sure about your confidence about an empty nest. I still do the travel arrangements for my 30+year olds - they moved out only after we moved into a 1 bedroom apartment.

Depending on her passport / visa she may need to show proof of funds and / or an onward / return ticket. Or you may see her far earlier than planned.:)

Don't be scared of the return ticket. Sometimes cheaper than one-way. I was explained to once that one-way can have less restrictions. Also the return fare can give you a cheaper fare bucket.

When I was putting together our RTW trip in 2012, AF flights from VEN-CDG return were less than half the price of the one way fare. Same flight. Go figure!
Just don't use or check in for the return leg if you choose not to.

Thanks for replies. Yes realise the situation with regard to Visa; she has the benefit of grandparent visa so that is not an issue. However I am looking at an openended ticket so she has that available if necessary...otherwise cheapest so far to LHR is via Singapore at $832 one way (through STA).
As far as getting them out the house a one bedroom unit is going to be the only way lol.
