Am planning a trip to the US starting mid-Jan and returning early Feb. I was interested in the collective wisdom on:

1. Maximising the SC/points earn from the routing, obviously flying as much J/F as possible and minimising costs.
2. Ideas for getting back from the East Coast of the US to LAX for the LAX-NAN-MEL return leg.
3. Only mandatory destinations are BOS and ORD (Chicago). Am also planning visits to NYC and DC, but may well use Amtrak to get to those, unless good value fares/SC are available.

I will be on 470SC at the start of this trip.

1. QF MEL-SYD $99, 10SC in Disc Y
2. FJ SYD-NAN $328, 20 SC in Disc Y
3. FJ NAN-LAX return $1,967, 280 SC in J
4. AA LAX-LAS, 10 SC in Disc Y
5. AA LAS-ORD-BOS $780, 210 SC in F (P class YUPP fare)

This will get me 525 SC from $3,488 of spending, with this being mostly essential (only possible change is a better SC/$ option to fly LAS-BOS. Open to suggestions, date for that is around 15 Jan). This leaves me on 1,025 SC without having undertaken any status run or made my way back to LAX.

SC runs under consideration
1. BOS-MIA-SJU in F/J (YUPP) - $258 and 180 SC each way

I want to visit someone in Chicago after BOS. Unsure if I should first fly BOS-MIA-SJU and then SJU-MIA-ORD (I think this should be about $350 from memory?). I know SJU-MIA-ORD-LAS is often cited as the best value run, but the price seems to spike if I change the dates so I stay in Chicago a few days. Is there a way around this?

Also assuming I flew BOS-MIA-SJU and then SJU-MIA-ORD, that would net me an extra 180+180=360SC, putting me on 1,385 (1,395 if including a trip to Montreal as discussed below). I would then need to find a way from ORD to LAX.

I need to visit Chicago, but SJU is simply there as a SC run and to see the place for probably 2 nights. Would love suggestions on better value runs. DC can be before or after Chicago, I'm flexible. Seeing as the current itinerary already has me close to WP, I'd probably look at DC first to save money, but once again, advice please!

Other flights considered
1. LGA-YUL in Y (no F/J on this route) - $147, 10 SC each way

How much time do you have?

I know SJU-MIA-ORD-LAS is often cited as the best value run, but the price seems to spike if I change the dates so I stay in Chicago a few days.
That's because without a stopover, the fare is SJU-LAS. Stooping in ORD give two separate fares - SJU-ORD and ORD-LAS which get added together; either/both of which may be more then SJU-LAS.

Flying MEL-SYD-NAN-LAX-LAS in one hit, will stay in LAS one night then midnight flight LAS-ORD-BOS after that. Looking at about 5-6 days in BOS, maybe 1-2 in NYC, 1-2 in DC, 4 in Montreal, then back to BOS overland, and from there flexible. Assume that takes 10-12 days, happy to have 3-4 days max in Chicago and the rest is flexible (another 3-4 perhaps).

What is your SC aim? WP qual. is 1400, Max "loyalty bonus [32K]" is 2000 & Additional benefits at 2400 [e.g 50K].

What is your Budget?
