Help me sort out my flights!

Hello all. I’m new to this forum but a long time FF.

I need help / advice - bear with me on the long winded explanation!

I came across an elusive QF BC Flight to CDG last week - and in my surprise and excitement - I booked it! The points were 1000 more than economy. A win!

So I’m off to France, Italy & UK with 2 weeks to plan my trip.

The problem is the return. I managed to find a PE Lon-Sin-Syd for my dates and booked that to secure a return. (My husband already a bit ruffled about staying at home, not having a return might have really done it!)

Next day a BA BC CR popped up for Lon-Sin. So I booked that. Ekk. I was hopeful, and a bit naive, thinking Qantas would be able to drop the BA PE Lon-sin. Not possible apparently. The PE tix are a package deal. SO - I will let the full PE go, with a penalty of 6000 points. That will mean I don’t have a return from Sin-Syd. Only CR available in my date range currently are QF or BA Economy.

Normally I would choose QF, to get the points and SC (as I’m QC+). However, I have been able to upgrade for $$ at checkin with BA. I don’t think QF allow this.

QUESTION: Should I settle for QF economy knowing it’s very unlikely to score an upgrade (I’m only Silver), or go BA with possibility of paid upgrade. Last time I did this it was approx $800.

Aside from this, which economy is the better choice?

Thank you in advance! A

As a backup, can I interest you in some Emirates F, perchance:

Another option is this:

Yeah, not exactly what you were looking for. But better to have a backup which you can easily cancel for a minimal amount of points if your preferred flight comes up. I'd say both are better than flying Y at least.
Thank you. The fee on Emirates is about $2k when I looked at it. And perhaps I shouldn't be, but Ive been hesitant to consider MH. There is a PE on BA same day. Im going to call help centre and see if they can connect the flights to cover me if the delay causes me to miss a flight.

Which BA flight are you on LHR-SIN?

If on BA15, then the obvious answer (if resigned to flying Y) is to book BA15 for the SIN-SYD leg. That way you know you won't miss your connection.

It's likely the PE seat was a "married segment" (or in this case just a single segment from LHR to SYD). Cancelling would bring it back for a through booking but not for SIN-SYD by itself.
The first leg is actually BA11. Im going to call to see if they can link the second leg on BA15. If I can, ill book that PE and hope for a paid upgrade at the counter.

Outbound would be about ~$2K in fees, inbound however is a princely sum of $88 SGD.

Ah, in that case I would go for the overnight stay. You wouldn't be protected if BA11 is late even if they link your bookings (which was confirmed in another thread does nothing for this situation).

Great news for anyone who has been following - and thank you all for your help and advice.
I found the PE on the 20/3 was available. I called QFF line and this time was fortunate to have someone who was extremely helpful. She was able to treat the new SIN-SYD BA15 leg (PE) as a rerouting on my BC LHR - SIN and therefore linking them as connecting flights - removing the issue of forfeiting a flight in case of a delay. She then cancelled the full PE LHR-SYD, which I fairly copped a 6k cancellation fee. They waived the 5k change fee on the re-routing. Great outcome. And still hopeful for a paid upgrade at counter given I am on the 700 with larger BC capacity. Thanks again all! Happy days.

If you didn't need the points, you could have kept the booking for now in case there is an involuntary change which would entitle you to cancel for free

This is true, have played that hand before. In this instance, I was keen to put it to bed and get the cash component refund (approx $1.5k).
