People often sign-up on a forum, and forget about it, only to re-visit it years later (i've done this on car forums). Length of tenure does not necessarily mean they've been loitering around here to learn our strange language ;)

Yes i know, i just thought I'd facetiously drop that one out there... :)

And while writing them all out longer might be nice for newbies and irregulars, it really doesn't take much learning for the major US, European, Asian and Australian airports... A few of the African and South American ones may be a little obscure but if reading the forums even now and then you should be able to pretty quickly pick up the main abbreviations...

As for others, yeah i see them and don't what the airport is although i can maybe surmise the general geographical location, but no biggy and i certainly don't lose any sleep over it, if it sounds even semi-interesting quick google search will fill me in...

I also realise that people are using, devices other than desk tops or bigger screen laptops, which would be an incentive to abbreviate, lately a couple have had me perplexed and I've had to go searching. It doesn't matter how many times I see ORD written, something in my brain says Orlando!

I must admit that my knowledge of airport codes is improving, even if my spelling isn't :)

Just as an aside, I'll have to try and compile a list of all the airports I've flown in and out of and get the old grey matter stiring.

I'm with you on ORD being Orlando... Most of the common ones I can now just breeze thru, but also need to consult the code chart in EF more than a few times.

Nah I've got ORD firmly established as Chicago...

I also use Flightmemory.com to log all my flights so that again has me often looking at the world map and the airport codes and then entering taken or booked flights and reinforcing it all...

And don't forget that if you are flying into Chicago, you could be going to ORD or MDW. :D

ORD was apparently chosen because the original terminal looked like an ORchiD. Go figure...

The ones that do my head in are the stupid abbreviations used such at TT for TransTasman, TP for TransPacific, TA for TransAtlantic, CD for ChauffeurDrive.

Wait until TT start flying TT and whether we get the VP for VIP's @ T-2

I prefer to write SEA-PHX-DFW-ORD-BOS, etc.

And the really scary part is that I read that without even blinking.....now!

Just be thankful that you don't need to know the 4 figure ICAO designators the the pilots and others in the aviation community use :!:

The prefix Y is reserved for Australia. For many (but not all) Australian ICAO codes, the second letter indicates which Flight Information Region (FIR) the airport belongs to — B Brisbane, S Sydney, M Melbourne and P Perth. However, the Sydney and Perth FIRs no longer exist and have been merged into the Brisbane and Melbourne FIRs, although the airport codes remain unchanged (e.g. Sydney YSSY, Darwin YPDN).

YMML - Melbourne Tullamarine
YMMB - Melbourne Moorabbin
YMEN - Melbourne Essendon
YMES - RAAF East Sale
YWSL - West Sale
YSSY - Sydney Kingsford Smith
