Hello, my girlfiend and I are travelling to Melbourne from Perth next May and we have two choices of flights.

These are:
Qantas at 199$ each way
Virgin at 169$ each way

Now this is already costing more than I planned to spend on flights, the cheaper option is always the prefered but one of the main issues I have is what points I'd receive from either flights. As Qantas is not much more when you think about the fact that you get 23kg of luggage and free food on board + a bit better times for flights.

Now the question I have is, which will get more points? I think I can get about 8,000 points with Virgin if my calculations are correct, but how many points would I get with Qantas? My girlfriend has a virgin card that is linked to my own, but she doesn't posess a Qantas card herself like I do. So my next question is, will that effect how many points I get? And if so, how drastically?

Hope you can help, Thanks for reading.

Zach Liepa.

Australia's highest-earning Velocity Frequent Flyer credit card: Offer expires: 30 Apr 2025
- Earn 100,000 bonus Velocity Points
- Get unlimited Virgin Australia Lounge access
- Enjoy a complimentary return Virgin Australia domestic flight each year

Perth-Melbourne is 1,682 miles, so for the return journey you and your girlfriend will each get 3,364 points (assuming no status) on Qantas. On Qantas, only the person that flies get the points, so your girlfriend will need to join to actually get them.

Not sure how you get 8,000 for the Virgin flights, I make it 3380 in total.

And yes your girlfriend will have to join QF FF to gain points, she cannot accrue them on your membership. However this is free when joining through Woolworths etc.

Even if you were both Platinum with Velocity you would only get 6760 total based on flights each way at $169 per person.

Sorry about that, dont know how I got 8000 lol

Still dont know witch is best to go with but thanks for you help.

Does the Virgin credit card offer any bonus points for booking Virgin flights that you know of? If no bonus, then I'd probably go with the airline you have the most points with already, or the one you're most likely to fly with in the immediate future.

Big fan of your photos by the way Zach!

WOW I have a fan :D Thanks Boeta!
Well I have no points on both the Qantas and Virgin card’s, and I think I will fly much more with Virgin than Qantas but as I have not been on Qantas for over 5 years I would like to fly with them.
But I think it will be Virgin as I should get 80 Status Credits if I fly tham.

Thanks, Zach Liepa
