Hi,

I need some suggestions for choosing the right hotel.

Normally it is Langham Place Mongkok. I just love the club there, and haven't been since the renovation.
Also, we are taking friends with us who have never been to HK before, and with Langham Place, I know what I'm getting and very familiar with its location etc.

However, for the dates I'm going, it is getting above $400 per night.

So.....I searched the net, and narrowed some alternatives to Icon hotel, and Grand Hourbour Kowloon.

Has anyone had experience at the club at these hotels. Plus, is the grand harbour hotel location an issue ?

Love to get some input.
Thanks in advance.

TQ

both hotels are located in less desirable areas - Harbour Grand is in Hung Hom which is a bit of a concrete jungle (mainly a big railway and road interchange). whilst Icon is a bit closer to the main shopping and tourist areas in Tshim Sha Tsui - you could walk to the main shopping areas and Star Ferry in about 15 mins.

the Icon is probably better for location whilst the Harbour Grand is a more reputable chain and may be a better standard.

Have stayed at the Harbour Grand Kowloon twice. They do operate a courtesy bus to/from TST and the Metro. It isn't close in to TST but has a nice harbour view, good restaurant and as I said - the courtesy bus. It is walkable to TST along the promenade too.

Have always found staff very good, and the club lounge is reasonable/good (excellent staff there!). Any specific queries, I'll try to answer if I can. I had no road noise from the interchange and didn't even know there was a railway in the immediate area.

Thanks so much for your reply.

I do like walking so wondered if it was a nice walk to TST. How long would it take? ( if it's not too hot !!)
The pool and gym looks good on the website too.

So, the club is reasonable/ good. Any further thoughts on it. I must admit, I do like the French champagne served at Langham Place club lounge.

Realistically, we often catch a cab, so I'm thinking that the hotels position won't be an issue.

Pressure is on when taking friends for their first time to HK, so I'd like it to be fabulous

TQ

About 25 minutes to the bottom end of Nathan Road? I was last there in April 2014, so memory is a bit rusty. I didn't look at the gym, but the pool is great - really good view around the area. I mainly ate at the club in the afternoons and evenings, food selection was reasonable (dim-sim, satays, something else??). I can't really comment on wine/spirits/champagne selection sorry - I was happy enough to drink Tsingtao (when in Rome..). The club also serves as the check in for those with access.

The Langham far outclasses the Harbour Grand. I stayed there for a miserable 7 nights a couple of years ago and could not wait to leave. I ended up moving a nice boutique hotel on Kimberley Road. The service at Harbour Grand was terrible.

I prefer the Langham in TST rather than Mongkok. The location is fantastic and the service amazing.

I also love the hotels along Canton Road, even the Royal Pacific - not the flashest but it's a great location, great view and walking distance to most things. A lot more reasonably priced than the Marco Polo trio of hotels - all fantastic also however.

I think the value of Mongkok is the price over TST.

True, and it's only a few MTR stops from TST anyway. Still, Royal Pacific can be had for the same price, not as nice but a much better location between Harbour City and China Ferry Terminal.

Thankyou for all your suggestions.

? What about royal plaza. Their club rooms are better priced. Is there a reason for that?

TQ

Another fairly average hotel in Mongkok, but you seem keen on that area it seems. I personally find it way too busy and dirty around there. Good for a visit.

Oh and don't forget to visit multiple sites as the prices can vary wildly.

Thats a good point...

Its just that I've only stayed at Langham place before.
maybe I could stay over on the island.

so many choices !!

TQ

In the warmer months we stay at the Four Seasons, winter we find Langham Pl to be great value.

No need to pay over the odds for facilities you'll never use. Makes for a great contrast...

Harbour Grand Hong Kong with club access is great. Superb views at the club, great service plus they opened up the restaurant next to the club for breakfast when I was there. Had made to order lobster omelette which was included as part of club access. You may also bump into the QF crew who would be taking you home as they stay there. Great value IMO.

I stayed at harbor grand 5 years ago. Unless it had a major refurbishment I wouldn't stay there.

I've never stayed at icon but heard it's good. It's also quite new.

My recommendation is hotel mira in tst. Great modern rooms, close MTR and reasonably priced, art least it was when the A$ was buying HK$7.

we stayed at the icon in jan this year.. fantastic hotel. went for a standard room and was very impressed... very new and modern furnishings... comfy bed, quiet, toilet area is absolutely fantastic
trendy rooms almost like what you would expect at W, just less eccentric
free minibar and nespresso as well
if you haven't already done so have a look at the pictures on TA... for a change we got MORE than what we expected from the pictures on TA.
location is slightly off but no big deal, right beside an MTR station (<5mins walk) and taxis were only a couple of dollars to the shopping areas. there's a bus that shuttles you to the shopping area but cabs are so cheap it didn't bother us much

Just to update.....and thank you to everyone for your input.

I've booked Langham Place in Mongkok.

Maybe a bit boring, as it's where we usually stay, but I know it's good, and I know the area, and how to get around from there, so that was a consideration as we are taking friends.

however, the club level room has set me back about $390 per night !!

now.....wondering if we should go to Macau for a day trip??

TQ

You definitely won't be disappointed, and it's not boring, I always end up there too! I was there in June and will be returning in November. The new club is very impressive, you will love it, make sure you enjoy a drink sitting on the swing chair! The hotel is actually being rebranded on the 27 th August to become the Cordis, I hope the change won't affect the wonderful atmosphere and service. Yes, a day trip to Macau is a well worth it.

I've been stalking this thread and have decided on the Langham Mongkok for a stay in September too. I wasn't aware of the re-brand, so thanks italianlover; I too hope they don't stuff up what sounds like a great place already.

I have stayed at The Harbour Grand HK about 4 times in the last 2 years and it is very good. The club is just as described by Aeolus and the views are spectacular. With the MRT at the end of the street and the free shuttle bus after the train from the airport, its really convenient to everything. There is construction work occurring next door at present but it was not a problem in June. You always run into some of the QF crew there.
