Just noticed the Herald Sun is only now visible to people with paid subscriptions. Will anybody pay to read what they can get on ABC?

Saw a bit about this on the box. Talked about restricting access to Andrew Bolt's opinion. That can only raise the collective IQ of Australia.

What will be funny is if they have a genuine scoop and put it behind the pay wall where no one can access it.

Hordes will pay to read Bolt. Not interested in the socialist sludge they publish out at ABC Drum!

You'll find that only premium content will be behind the paywall. Breaking news never would be simply as other outlets report it too. But like it or lump it more content will end up behind paywalls simply because it costs a lot of money to collect the news.

Looks like the people playing HeraldSun's Supercoach are complaining the most.
Might take a while for the paywall to work at all.

Anything like this will always take time to become accepted, but more sites will do the same.

For two months you simply need to register. After that, unless you have a 6 or seven day subscription, there will be a fee.

It should not affect supercoach.

Snide comments aside I was referring in general about how much it costs. Collecting news, sending it back and publishing and consistently doing it isn't cheap.

I'm working on the Olympics and the amount of money we have to spend to cover it is not a small amount. And i am just handling the logistics and technology component.

And i understand this, but still can't bring myself to pay for news in Australia. Self defeating circle really. Trashy journalism means i don't buy, me not buying means trashy and cheap news happens.

Bolt is a sexist, racist A-hole, if people are stupid enough to read his rubbish - well a fool is soon parted from their money. The good thing is that random readers won't be losing IQ points when they chance upon his columns.

As for socialist sludge, I was just returning to the thread to ask if David Marr also writes for this paper and hence will also be locked away from the general public.

BTW sounds like you've actually watched the drum - you've got one up on me then.

I agree that the standard of journalism is something left to be desired, I do know that some of that is being addressed from what I have seen.

According to a presser from The Australian this morning over 30,000 have taken up the digital pass since the launch.

Is that still in the free offer period? It was 3 or 6 months for free? Either 30,000 isn't that impressive to me considering that home subscribers get free access to the online content. I would assume The Oz has more than 30,000 home subscribers.

No the free offer period finished last week IIRC (mine ran out a few days ago and was 3 months). the 30,000 didn't include home deliveries - that was mentioned separately. was another 10k on top of that.

I accept good journalism is expensive, and worth paying for. However, I don't associate the Herald Sun with good journalism. Used to like The Australian, but that has gone down some strange path in the last few years.....

That as certainly been mentioned before!! I would though challenge anyone to dispute the sport coverage of the Herald Sun. That's the side of the paper I normally read...

I,m one of the horde who nearly throws up when i hear his voice.Have stopped watching channel 10 because of him.(nothing on it anyway)
