Hertz - Full Size - Now A Hyundai i45

Most rental car companies operate their core fleet at either a cost neutral or in some cases at a cost positive basis.

Like I said it all comes down to the discount from the manufacturer and the buy back or on sell value.

Retail pricing on hire cars bears very little relevance to the equation. Ford, Holden & Toyota have HUGE fleet discounts, sometimes up to 30% or more. Hyundai however are closer to 15% discount for large corporate fleet.

Rental companies use a whole life cost equation so even if the Ford G6E were $10,000 more to buy at a retail level than the Hyundai i45 the Ford could still end up cheaper to own.

It's a complex process they use for purchasing and is also largely based on buy back value.

I would place no bets on the car you want to rent based on its retail price to buy.

I love it when I see those "program car" sales at the dealers, wonder how many people realize where they came from?

It is interesting to read the posts about various cars here from the perspective of occasionally being in the market for a new car. I drive a Kluger Grande. ( previous shape) just hired one in NZ ( not Grande) and was very impressed. However the new cost is about $66k vs say the Santa Fe in the $40's. I am a bit price sensitive as the car is for biz and tends to get mileage piled on early.
The Hyundai seems to get quite a good rap from some of you, i would be interested to know about other makes and models from any AFFr that uses a lot of car hire, is there anywhere on this site where more reports and comparisons show up.?

Hadn't picked up on this change until this thread. Hertz will have to be off my list for now and I'll make sure Avis knows why I use them.

There is a BIG difference in quality & features between the Kluger and the Santa Fe. The Kluger is also bigger and nicer to drive. It is a steep jump in price IMO but is 7 seats a necessity? If not there are other alternatives.

Yep. I like the new kluger, have not driven the Santa Fe , but don't need 7 seats, but do want top of the range , maybe I should option up the second in the range?
I think a five seat option is in there somewhere.
What alternatives would you match to the kluger then?
I had even considered a Nissan. But that means a 4WD and I no longer have need for off road......although nice to have if I change my mind I suppose.
I am not a small person , so a large comfortable interior is important to me.

Volkswagen Tiguan 155 kW DSg.
Range Rover Evogue starts @ $55K
Maybe a Volvo XC90
Kia Sportage ???

Hertz appear to have changed their mind again! Full size is now showing as Toyota Camry! Not sure which is worse - Camry or i45! At least the Camry is Australian made.

When I picked up my last Hertz car at MEL a couple of weeks ago at just before midnight, plenty of XR6's and SV6's, but no i45's in sight! My booking was for a group D/i45 - booked as I had a free day voucher, which only allows a max. of D, for a stuff up they made, and because I figured the changes were only made recently, so there was a fair chance they would still give me an SV6 or XR6 due to this - and I was allocated an XR6 with 50,000km! My profile has a permanent note saying I prefer XR6 (which is often ignored!). Interestingly, my rental agreement showed I'd reserved group P! And no, I didn't get charged the higher rate! I did swap the XR6 for a brand new SV6 though - much preferable! Annoyingly, car collection and change took ages, as the board wasn't working and there were only two staff with a few people waiting, so I had to wait for them to tell me where my car was (down the other end of the row from the booth!), then wait again to change the car (not really complaining about that part, since they gave me the car I wanted, which I wasn't entitled to).

On a related note, I noticed Europcar at St Kilda had a new Camry today. Toyota must be back doing good fleet deals on Camry's! Damn it!

Also just noticed that Hertz appears to have substantially increased the price of Excess Reduction (AER) and MAX cover for standard vehicles. AER now showing on the website as $30.00 per day excluding taxes, which is $33.00 incl GST (was mid $30 if I remember correctly) and over $50 per day from major airports! That's more than I pay for my rental most of the time! I'm glad I have no need to reduce the excess in most cases!

MAX cover for prestige cars doesn't appear to have changed - still showing as $49.09 excl. taxes.

I noticed this when I went in and checked a future booking as well - it continues to change. I'm not sure I like a Camry as a "full size" vehicle.

I have just checked my bookings and yep the Camry is now a Full Size, I wonder what happened to the i45.....

This has appeared though but all my bookings are Full Size

Out of interest, what have you actually been getting? What have you had a choice of?

Just saw this post from a few months ago!

The Full Size Auto as I mentioned above is a Toyota Camry....

Full Size Auto

This is what I book as the price difference is only a few $$ between a Corolla and the Camry, and to get the "Premum Full Size" is normally an extra $20 per day..

I have so far always ended up in an XR6 or SV6 still as I get upgraded

This happens at SYD, OOL & BNE

I have had a few prestige rentals C200/IS250 but they are very hard to book now even out of BNE. OOL is pretty much impossible

Still no news on the "HSV" range which was mentioned by you (I think) late last year

You won't get a decent Evoque for under a 100k IMHO......

good unit though. Production can't keep up.

Outstanding car, test drove one the other week as I am thinking of replacing my Q5 for one, but once you option one out nicely it's about $95k which for the size is a bit of an ask.....
