Retail pricing on hire cars bears very little relevance to the equation. Ford, Holden & Toyota have HUGE fleet discounts, sometimes up to 30% or more. Hyundai however are closer to 15% discount for large corporate fleet.
Rental companies use a whole life cost equation so even if the Ford G6E were $10,000 more to buy at a retail level than the Hyundai i45 the Ford could still end up cheaper to own.
It's a complex process they use for purchasing and is also largely based on buy back value.
I would place no bets on the car you want to rent based on its retail price to buy.
There is a BIG difference in quality & features between the Kluger and the Santa Fe. The Kluger is also bigger and nicer to drive. It is a steep jump in price IMO but is 7 seats a necessity? If not there are other alternatives.

Out of interest, what have you actually been getting? What have you had a choice of?
You won't get a decent Evoque for under a 100k IMHO......
good unit though. Production can't keep up.
Outstanding car, test drove one the other week as I am thinking of replacing my Q5 for one, but once you option one out nicely it's about $95k which for the size is a bit of an ask.....
