Hertz Issue

Learned my lesson years ago!

As much as possible I endeavour to finalise my paper work and get a hard copy of it before departing the rental desk upon returning the vehicle.

This policy might take some extra time but has seriously saved me much further hassle over the years since adopting that policy.
indeed a sound policy. I do likewise with hotel check-outs. I never use the "express" process for the same reasons.

Yep I do the same. I had two occasions about 8 years ago when Hertz at Auckland charged me for fuel when I had returned the car full. From then on I would drag someone out to check the car.

I'm considering saying to hell with their refund process and having Amex do a chargeback.

Go the chargeback.

What you describe was almost the exact problem I had with Redspot in early 2000s........except Redpot refused to accept I had dropped the car back and proceeded to bill me an extra day (half day maybe?) and fuel despite me providing my Ansett boarding pass and fuel receipt.

It's easy to say get confirmation before leaving, but if the counter is unattended, what can you do?? Miss the flight whilst waiting for someone to turn up?

Don't rely on Hertz, request a chargeback through your credit card. I never thought to do that all those years ago and it still bugs me those ba*ta#ds got away with it.

Have had the same with Hertz and now always ensure I have a receipt before leaving the carpark.

Basically I've given up on Hertz - they'll only now get my business if they're the cheapest as their "loyalty" and their fulfilment of promises to regular customers is zero.

I've gone from being near 100% loyal (price irrelevant) to almost totally shopping on price. Big change.

There seems to be a bit of a theme with Hertz in this, which you'd think wouldn't happen having the same parent as Avis.

Are you getting confused with Budget, which Avis own? Hertz is a public company while Avis is a separate public company after the break up of Cendant.

I had similar issues where the default credit was to DJ no matter what I put in the system, their systems are just cough these days and I am no longer renting form them unless they have more of the 50% off specials for the luxury collections etc. Mind you with the DJ points + pay options those points are looking a lot more valuable these days!

Unfortunately I agree. I can't get my pres circle credits on coy arranged bookings. How cough is that!!

Yep, you're right, getting my companies mixed up.

Avis. Counter in Akl was unattended. So I waited. When the staff returned my return was overdue by 10 minutes. Yet I waited 20 for them to come back from a break. So guess who got a 1 hour penalty ?
Not happy jan

Surely you didn't pay the extra though? I'd see them in court before parting with cash in such a situation.

Well the irony was that when we collected the car it was really dirty.
I took photos.
Showed the girls and got a discount off the hire.
When reading the docs properly later we discovered that we paid Moore than quoted, received the discount, and the late fee we were told was NOT bring charged, actually was charged, the net result was we paid less than was originally quoted but not less than we might have. I decided to give up at is point and not argue the point any further.

I have a Hertz car booked for AKL in a couple of weeks. It looks like I need to be extra careful with the vehicle inspection, fuel tank refill and return procedure.

Also make sure you check the registration is current !!!!!

Mr jojen & I hired a Hertz vehicle in Auckland 2 years ago. Drove around the top of the North Isalnd for 5 days and ended up about 50kms from Auckland staying with friends for a few daysbefore continuing down south. Mr jojen discovered the registration had expired 2 days before !!!!

After ringing Hertz and being assured that it had been renewed and everything was ok we were surprised to get a phone call about an hour later to inform us that they wanted to replace our hire car with another one.
After further questioning we were told that not only was the car unregisered but also UNINSURED !!!!

I hate to imagine what the outcome would have been , even with travel insurance, if we had been involved in an accident.

Needless to say we have not hire a vehicle from Hertz since.
