indeed a sound policy. I do likewise with hotel check-outs. I never use the "express" process for the same reasons.Learned my lesson years ago!
As much as possible I endeavour to finalise my paper work and get a hard copy of it before departing the rental desk upon returning the vehicle.
This policy might take some extra time but has seriously saved me much further hassle over the years since adopting that policy.
