Hertz requiring proof of fuel purchase

I do hope this change means that we get full cars to start with, which clearly has not been happening despite the fact they should all be checked at the depot.

I found that when I worked at Hertz the people who didn't like being told about glow plugs also had no idea on refueling a diesel.

They would be annoyed when you mentioned the glow plugs even though they looked at you blankly. Then on returning the vehicle they hated being sent away to put more fuel in after having it explained that it froths up and you need to let it settle and that is why your fuel tank is showing well below full. We were a small franchise so it was easy to check each vehicle as it was returned.

Just dropped a car back at Hertz in Seattle, and only checked the fuel gauge and did not ask to see a receipt, although I have had the vehicle for 18 days.

Was also asked for petrol receipt after a short (ie 3 day) rental in Adelaide recently...showed the receipt and not sign of any extra charges :)

About a year ago I hired a Camry from thrifty Which was "upgraded" to a falcon. Wasn too impressed that the economical car I'd booked became a fuel guzzler, worse still when I drove 150km and then put 30L into it.

Emailed Thrifty mentioning the missing fuel and the fact I'd been forced to take a car that guzzled the fuel more than the one I'd booked. The response: the camry has a 55L tank and the Falcon 60L, so the fuel usage is close enough to the same.

I kid you not! Didn't bother chasing it up (which I guess is what they bank on$

Thrifty certainly didn't get the point. Actually current specs for Falcon show a 68 litre tank, and Camry 70 litres! Given that Thrifty is owned by NRMA, you might think they would know a bit more about cars!!

I couldn't believe that this idiot actually thought a cars fuel consumption is based on the size of it's tank! Obviously hire from the bottom at Thrifty.

You then have a long gap since filling up and can't prove you didnt drive it that far.

I think you can "prove" it. I always take a photo of the instruments (power on) and clock whenever I pick up, fill up and return. With a stat dec, it's hard to refute...

And often, the car rental company doesn't really want to annoy your employer either (if they want more business).

LOL Gas Guzzler, you should have used 18.6L for the Camry in Urban conditions while the Ford would have used 22.3L according to the Government figures, thats not much of a difference. My XR6 uses around 17.6L in metro BNE driving while the G6ET uses 23.7L every 150km when I am having "fun" and avoiding vans with flashes.
