Just read in another forum that starting the second quarter this year Diamond members will receive complementary premium Wi-Fi and also from August ALL HH members will receive complementary standard Wi-Fi.

I hope it's close to a normal Wi-Fi speed.
In some Aussie Hiltons the current "standard" Wi-Fi is somewhere between slow and unusable.

The standard wi-fi complimentary for all members is a long time coming - particularly when it's free anyway at a lot of other hotels.

This is a good move by Hilton. And I agree - hope the premium wifi is faster!

While great news for all general guests ( lets be honest... Wifi is a must in any hotel stay) Disappointing to see the devaluation for gold members.

Enhancements thick and fast.

Most non chain hotels have free wi-fi. And are cheaper.

Normal wi-fi while everyone else gets slow wi-fi.

I find the free wifi offered at most hotels is OK unless wanting to watch/download movies, then higher speeds would be beneficial. But I never have time for that when travelling.

Disappointing to see the devaluation for gold members.

That what hotels some chains are doing, make the second top tier relatively easy to get through status match or credit cards and then devaluate it.

Particularly as actually qualifying Gold (20 stays/30 nights) requires a pretty decent spend

How is it a devaluation for gold? They're not changing the gold benefit?

If the speed is throttled or quota enforced for gold, then it is a devaluation.

Currently Gold and Diamond (and maybe silver) get free "shaped" wifi - many properties charge for faster access.

Note that I have seen comment the reservation must be made through Hilton "family" channels to access this benefit.

It's just garbage. Just like IHG platinum status in London used to get you free 'limited' wifi but walk out to a local coffee shop and you get 30 MB speeds for the price of a coffee. Had to be an ambassador level HW to get normal access,

When we check in, maybe we should ask such hotels for a trade off between having a shower and using water and 'normal' high speed internet.

complete bollocks.

Costs ... how many rooms does a hotel have ... imagine half using the Internet maybe FaceTime or skyping ... some tryng to download movies.... shaping the Internet keeps a little available to all.

because it's no long a gold only perk....making gold less important for some.
But if they had made it the same as diamond, you guys would be having a cough about diamond being devalued. Bottom line, nothing has changed for Gold.

In a way it does, but then when you're attempting to convince a generation that believes access to decent internet is up there with fundamental human rights (and more important than access to clean water), your argument falls flat in the face of simply large companies screwing their customers.

In any case, free internet is often enough for surfing, forums, airline websites and checking email (without large attachments). Having road tested various speeds recently, for downloading larger files it is generally not recommended on the default freely available wifi, as the transfer rate is too slow. I haven't tried video conferencing let alone VOIP (e.g. Skype without video, Facebook Messenger Call, etc.), but I can't imagine it'd be heavily taxing on bandwidth.

The "common fix" of going to the local McDonalds or Starbucks is always there but not suitable for when privacy becomes important. Plus, as I've found, their wifi (usually requires a purchase of an item) isn't always great or stable either.

I suppose this Hilton proposal is better than their overall plan previously where all members would have needed to pay for the premium wifi.
