Yup thrown out at 8pm!

i mentioned it in a tripadvisor review as being far too early . management responded saying it with ' demand is constantly under review' or some such thing. Well on the day I was there people were just getting started when they were offering last drinks. really enjoyed the service but 8pm is just so early!

Looking at staying here in Sept, anyone have any recent experiences? Also, do you generally find the best price on hilton.com? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. I have no status, as I'm typically at IHG, but have considered HH, the thought of starting at the bottom is not appealing though.

As a HH Gold, staying in various Australian Hilton hotels this year (Adelaide, Melbourne South Warf, Sydney for a total of 7 stays) I have always been upgraded and provided exec lounge access.

HH Gold here and in Brisbane now - first time ever I have not been upgraded to executive level. Upgrade was from King Guestroom to Deluxe which appears to be the same room + bathrobe, slippers and water. When discovered I couldn't access the lounge I queried reception who quoted their new lounge access policy and stated I needed to be diamond or pay $60 extra per night for room upgrade. Major disappointment and has made me think twice about revisiting this not particularly cheap hilton property in future.

This is atrocious and a perfect example of the devaluation of the HHonors program a few months ago.

Going back to 2007, this is what Oz Hilton properties often used to do to both Golds and Diamonds - breakfast was also at the hotels discretion.

Even before the changes earlier this year, properties had the ability to simply provide Gold's breakfast, Diamonds lounge access and that was basically it.

However, until recently the hotels continued to give gold's lounge access even if not upgraded to an "Executive" room.

What's changed? Why is this seeming beginning to happen?

I'm thinking there has been a huge influx of Oz resident Gold and Diamonds courtesy of Virgin Australia - many may be booking standard rates whereas before they would have booked an Executive or breakfast inclusive rate.

This would be costing the properties considerable revenue - something has had to give; this may the beginning.

Many posts on Flyertalk point out that Gold is very easy to obtain these days, so that is probably an additional factor.

They think can control for this by 'for a period' making it easier to attain the Gold status and reducing the benefits to contain costs. They hope to obtain additional business through the assumed loyalty. The problem with hotel loyalty is that other hotel chains also offer status match programs and status runs which remove the competitive advantage and they then have to offer the benefits again.

Unfortunately they lose their high value clients such as paradox987.

BTW, we didn't end up staying at Hilton Brisbane last weekend. They must have had a great weekend for business as the only rooms that could be booked were Executive Doubles at +$400.

Given that govt rates are way lower than even the AAA rates I am not sure that they are hurting too much as a result of the status grant. Also need to factor in people like me who in 2009 and 2010 put $0 through Hilton and from June 2011 have put $15K through Hilton mostly because of the status grant. That is $15K they would not have received.

Paid $250 for the room booked as part of the Great Getaway so a bit cheaper than the regular $350 guest room rate. That said the room is pokey and I've had better at the much cheaper Novotel(albeit less central). Sebel also regularly available for ~$200 on "mystery deal". Where did you end up staying? It seems that the "mining states" have muchly overpriced hotels cf to service delivered(admittedly breakfast in restaurant is pretty good). I need to stay for a week in October and $370 for cheapest available :!: Only 8 more nights until Diamond this year so I might give it another go after status upgrade. I think the NOR1 system may have also contributed to a lowering of status benefits if this experience is repeated at other properties.

Where did you end up staying?.

We stayed home and spent the money on restaurants, shows, movies etc. Really let our hair down and didn't make the bed on Sunday morning just to create the hotel experience.
