Are you still able to check-in/bag drop in the city? How does it work?

Yes up to a couple of hours before at Central or Kowloon, all the usual QF, CX etc and premium check in too.

I did it on Sunday. Caught a cab to Kowloon station (Central station if you're staying on Hong Kong Island) and checked in at 10am for my 9.15pm flight and then spent the day shopping without having to worry about my suitcase, which I didn't see again until my arrival in Brisbane. You need an airport express train ticket which you can buy at the station.

OK - so it's at the train station I assume?

You need to have a express train ticket to the airport.

You don't actually have to catch the train though..?? (although why you wouldn't is beyond me....)

Anything else I'm missing?

Only thing you are missing is to duck over to the City Super supermarket at the Mall close by and pick me up some Ruffles Sour Cream and Onion potato chips - four or five bags would be good.

Mmmmmmm. I'll post a pic in just over a weeks time :-)

As long as the airline you are flying offers it you can check in whenever you want. I checked in 5 hours prior and no issues at all.

I think you do need a ticket though as you need it to get to the checkin desks.

You can use the city check in up to 90 mins before your flight. Earliest you can check in is 24hrs. You'll need an airport express ticket to get through the gate but you obviously don't have to take the train straight away.

Transport - To & From Airport - Airport Express - Hong Kong International Airport

Seems to be a little known fact that a free shuttle operates to/from most hotels. I always stay in the Tsim Sha Tsui (Kowloon) area and the bus is very convenient to this part of town.

It's quite a picturesque train ride and I highly recommend it.

(Central station if you're staying on Hong Kong Island)

It's actually technically Hong Kong Station (not Central) / IFC Mall.

On a separate note, you can check in anytime during the day, with some airlines also allowing checking the night before too

Does anyone know if Qantas counters at Kowloon station are open in the morning or midday check in or just a few hours before the evening flights as most QF flights are in the evening

I have definitely checked in at midday at Kowloon for an evening flight back to AU on QF. Not sure about early morning but would be surprised if they weren't open.

For the record having status is next to useless for the in town check in at Kowloon. I've never had to queue there. Don't know if the same can be said for Hong Kong.

Yes they open alongside everyone else. Depending on the station, could be around 4 airlines sharing the same counter.

Reductionist is right about status, there is no separate line for J, F on QF. Only CX has that facility.

My last experience was travelling on CX in October checking in at Central, and I thought that QF had a separate J/F counter in Kowloon the last time I used it but I could be wrong

Late checkout & an afternoon/evening swim at the FS is the way to go:D

CX certainly have a J/F desk but there are no real queues.

How do you deal with wet swimming gear in hand luggage?
