I know there are lots of fancy places in HKG, but I want to find out if anyone who frequents HKG has any favourite places. Cost maybe capped around AUD $100 per head for a party of 3, not sure how fancy you can go for that over there. Will be a one off special dinner!

Or even nice places for high tea. Langham?

What type of cuisine are you after?

If you do a search there are one or two recent threads on this topic.

A few weeks ago, I stayed at the Marco Polo HK Hotel and discovered a restaurant called Cucina, which has an Asian and Western open kitchen.

Mrs Max and I thoroughly enjoyed the service and the food quality. We were given a window seat where we were able to enjoy the Laser show that occurs every night.

We ended up eating there twice and were not disappointed with any of the courses that we had ordered.

One of the entrees called Golden fried eggplant with spicy garlic was just superb.

+1 for Marco Polo HK hotel.

We stayed there in Feb and booked dinner there for our last night. It was
great. We made sure to book window seats and we saw the whole Symphony of lights
from the comfort of our dinner table. If you want you can walk out on to the Ocean Terminal
roof and also get a great view away from the hordes of people.

you will get a view like this from outside on the terminal.

Food was great as well. We had 4 people and it think it ended up around $400 AU + drinks
so in your price range.

I know it would be hard to do but try and pick a clear night. The lights were fantastic. We
only had 1 out of 9 and it was on the last night.

As QF009 touches on, you need to be a bit more specific. There's so many choices in Hong Kong, all over the show.

Your are lucky that A$1 can get you HK$7.2.

Dinner:

cough Lam Moon (Wan Chai)
Ming City Hot Pot Seafood Reataurant
Unkai Japanese Restaurant
Sabatini
Morton's Steak House
T'ang Court
Amigo's Restautant Happy Valley

High Tea:

Good Luck.

Yes last time I went to HKG it was around $3-$4.... very bad.

Thanks for suggestions, will look into more. I think High Tea will be the way to go, somewhere with an awesome view and amazing food would just be delightful.

Out of the 3 that I suggested, only Grand Hyatt offers good view. If view is important, Intercontinental will fit the bill. I would try the quiet areajust behind the receoption area. They offer Kopi Luwak which is the most expensive coffee in the world at a very reasonable price and is a must try.

You can't go wrong with high tea at the Peninsula

Where are you based? I have a copy of the latest Michelin Restaurant Guide for Hong Kong that you are more than welcome to borrow.

As others have mentioned, it all really depends on what style of food you are looking for. HK restaurants are very diverse.

One restaurant I particularly enjoyed was Yung Kee.

Thanks MDC. I won't borrow it, as I think going into the Michelin guide will mean more than AUD $100 per head just for high tea! only want to budget around that, and no more ...

You'd be surprised. We had lunch at a few of the 1 star restaurants and only paid $50AUD for the two of us. The guide has a whole range of restaurants at various prices.

Sorry to bump this thread (it seemed the most relevant), but there's been a lot of talk about the Michelin-starred Tim Ho Wan (Tim Ho Wan, Michelin-star restaurant, Kowloon | Wonton joy) lately, and we're hoping to try and get there for a quick feed between getting off QF29 in the early morning on a Saturday and our CX connection at 1415 - has anyone here been there, and if so, any recommendations about the food / queue strategy?

We're thinking we might head straight out there in the morning via the AE / taxi from Kowloon and try to stake a place in the queue (not sure how early they start handing out tickets) in the hope of getting in during the first hour - then cab it back to HKG hopefully by 1230-1300 in order to have a buffer in which to make the flight (bags, if any, will be checked through). Forgoing a nice, long morning in the Wing/Pier for a long wait outdoors of course, but it seems like it may be worth it.

Is this realistic? Any tips from those who have been or know about it would be most welcome. :)

You can completely forget about Tim Ho Wan. The queues are horrendous. You can read some reviews here: Guangdong Dim Sum Chinese Restaurant Tim Ho Wan, the Dim-Sum Specialists's Overview - Hong Kong Restaurants Guide HK Restaurant - OpenRice in English

Honestly, it's not worth the trek. If you do make it, great. If you don't, then you'd have wasted your nice layover in HKG. There are far better places for dim sum (yes, speaking as a local here) that aren't listed on the Michelin Guide. Send me a PM if you want - I can recommend other types of cuisine as well.

Thanks for the feedback kchika, but really? Provided our flight isn't delayed, I'd imagine we'd get to the restaurant at least by 7.30am, which gives us a 2.5 hour buffer - I've read those reviews, but haven't seemed to find any where they've gone in before the doors opened to get a ticket. I'm happy to try and get a ticket as early as possible and go for a walk around the area, but if you really think that getting there so early isn't enough to guarantee a seat soon after opening, then perhaps we should reconsider.

We've had a few HKG layovers, and will have a few more on that trip, so not really worried about wasting it. And of course, would be delighted to receive any recommendations - love dining in HK. :)
