HKG or SIN - Your Preference?

I don't put one over the other; both are great for travellers.

Heading to HKG today; I expect to be landside no more than 15 minutes after disembarking the aircraft. With SIN it's no more than 10. + SIN.

For departures, HKG is better as there none of this pesky gate security. + HKG.

Happy for either TBH.

I largely agree, and the gate security at SIN is a pain especially when in transit and rejoining the same aircraft. But HKG does put on the last minute bag check for liquids in the airbridge for flights to OZ which is also a pain, just not as big a one as SIN.

The last few times I've exited and re-entered in SIN, it's only taken 5-10 minutes from queuing (or no queue as is reasonably often the case) at immigration to passing back airside. Usually closer to 5 minutes if I already having boarding passes.

Gate security was also discussed in http://www.australianfrequentflyer....s-skytrax-best-airport-81734.html#post1606565

Some prefer it on balance, including myself. Will have to see how T4's conventional centralised security compares.

Like everywhere else they are both good and bad depending upon the day and time. I've never really had a bad experience at SIN but prefer HKG for some reason even though out last transit there was diabolical. (15 min to get from gate 70 to gate 24)

Ignore all the lounge facilities in the airport:

- Airport: SIN: Far more facilities for general public than HKG, with all the butterfly gardens, cinemas, swimming pools etc to keep everyone busy. Also arrival and departure level are the same (except the new T4).

- City: Hong Kong: Far more exciting to visit than Singapore in general, more things to do, better shopping experiences, more variety of restaurants, and stunning Victoria Harbour.

Last evening I was landside 7 minutes after entering the terminal at gate 31 HKG. I do have one of those nice barcodes on the back of my passport; looking at the (lack of) queues for immigration that probably saved me 90 seconds.

Arrived in Singapore yesterday at 6pm. Hour and a half to get through immigration! An extraordinary outlier in my experience.

Singapore train to city is a joke. 5000 stops, change trains, not friendly if you have baggage etc. It's simply not comfortable or practical.
But only ~SGD2-3 to get to city. HKG is on the expensive side and one to avoid to cut down on costs.

In HKG you could spend ~$4 AUD and get from airport->city on the bus. Or Take S1/S56 or free Novotel bus to Tung Chung, then MTR for about the same rate.

That is what I do in HKG now. I stayed out in Kowloon last time and used bus back to airport but if wanting to use in town checkin then cannot avoid paying minimum HKD60.

I guess it's like paying AU$6 for a service.

I did note while passing at ~4pm yesterday Qantas had two "early check in" counters operating.

I do not know what time they opened.

In SIN, a taxi to town is only a little bit more than the airport train at HKG. A lot of locals would catch a taxi too, and rarely catches the train or bus to/from the airport (unless they're just going to the airport for shopping landside). If it's peak hour in one terminal, perhaps try a different terminal, where it can be empty. Do check flight schedules before you head over to another terminal though.

In HKG, the train is very expensive. Most locals would catch the airport bus - the network is pretty good and reaches most of the major places. Some would also catch S1/S56 and connect to the MTR. A few airlines also allow online check-in, so if I'm HLO, there's absolutely no point for me to take the airport train to the airport.

I find HKG more compact. Almost missed my flight last time in SIN going from the Kris lounge in T3 to Gate B9. I was almost jogging and it still took me a long time.

It's probably 10min walk at most MEL - did you mistakenly go via T2 the T1? Or 1 step forward - 2 back courtesy Champagne infusion? ;)

IIRC estimated walking time from SKL to furthest B gate 10 is 11mins - estimated walking tome from SKL to furthest A gate 21 is 14mins - but that is only memory - and that is not a fast walk. A brisk walk SKL to A21 than all the way back to B10 takes 30mins - I have timed that several times.

no no, I checked the map. Estimated walk 11 mins across the central atrium area ( where the immigration booths enter departure), then another 10 mins to B9. So 21 mins, which they always overestimate.. but it would have been a good 10-12 minutes for me. I was running late, should have left the lounge earlier... but had late inbound from PVG in the A gates.
