Oh - I forgot to mention great OpUp today - booked in Y, preallocated a W seat (happy about that but it was kind of expected on QF30) then on checkin, was upgraded to 13K and after thanking the staff, she asked me to wait a moment to see if there was a better seat - now I have 3K in the F section of the aircraft albeit with J service levels.

Me = one happy camper :D

Noice!!!! :D

Thanks for the pics too. Nice open air lounge - that's the ticket. Decor looks very much QP-ish, but since it is open air rather than bounded it doesn't feel as drab or dull.

If they match the SYD/MEL F Lounge in terms of comfort and service (including full restaurant service, possibly a spa(!)), that will be the icing on the cake. (I guess it'd be a bit hard having your best network lounge in an outstation rather than your home port(s)).

Congrats on a great op up dot :)

The "new" lounge does look good. If departing on QF I would actually be tempted to use that lounge now as it would be closer than the CX lounge and has a decent drinks selection (yes I am a philistine and am happy to drink Veuve Cliquot)...

Doesn't look like they've changed it much. As you say, divider gone, and one large area. The food service counter area looks no different to what it used to, but as you have shown food/drink quality and selection has improved.

That said, I will have to go to the Wing F lounge in May when i'm there to see what all the fuss is about:)

Yep - food was pretty much what they had in the old small FLounge. One big bonus though is the space with no F pax from MEL it will pretty much only be WPs and a handful of F pax to/from SYD it's bound to be nice and quiet.

Also, remember that this is an interim step before they do the full revamp later in the year.

The Veuve seems to be a champagne upgrade from what they had.

I like the openness of the 'new' F lounge. Will be nice when they refurb it.

I'll have J lounge access im transit on QF 29 & 30 in the next few weeks. It seems that the QF lounge is near the gate and the Wing / Pier is a bit of a walk.

My priority is to have a show, a snack and drink and read the paper until reboarding. Is it worth spending extra time going to the CX Lounges?

Consensus here seems that it is worth the extra time to experience the CX lounges , but in saying that I have not looked at the new QF lounges.

With only 2:10 stopover on the way over to LHR and 1:30 on the way back, you probably won't have much spare time - especially considering reboarding/security and the walk to/from the lounges. Concentrate on getting to the lounge ASAP and getting a shower. If there are no showers free, then possibly think about the Cathay lounge...

I'd say no - it's not that close, at least a five minute walk each way to The Wing (and that's the F lounge - add another couple for the J lounge entrance), which takes a significant chunk out of your transit time there. My limited experience with The Wing's J lounge is that it's nice, the noodle bar looks great, but unless that's what you're after it's not much better (if at all) than the new QF J lounge - and much busier.

Forget The Pier - it's nowhere near. And I don't think it's worth checking out the G16 Dragonair lounge either.

Unless you were tossing up between the QF F lounge and The Wing F lounge (in which case I'd say try The Wing if it's not too busy), I'd stick with the QF lounge - much closer to the gate, quieter, newer, and has equally as good refreshments (and better showers IMHO). And you'll get boarding calls, which you wouldn't at The Wing.

Enjoy your transit - I'm becoming a big fan of HKIA (except all the walking!). :)

Thanks Mal and DJ. I was leaning that way. A shower is my number one priorty so I'll stick with QF this trip.

Thanks for sharing the pics and congrats on the op-up! Or was it a double op-up?

There's Veuve in the QF lounge! All this while I've been enjoying the "exotic delights" of Moet and Deutz in the CX Flounges (more so the Wing) in the apparent false belief that they were much superior lounges... Still like the cabanas though, but the dining is much of a muchness (yes there's restaurant style service in CX but the food is like something you'd spoon out of one of those buffets anyway) and you also get the occassional lounge bouncer who makes a face at your BP when she realises you're not actually flying CX. And as simongr mentioned it's much closer to where QF flights normally depart anyway. QF Flounge here I come next time, maybe after a shower in the Wing cabanas.

And congrats on the super op up dajop! :D

Currently in the HKG QF business lounge and am impressed. Very roomy with plenty of seating. Looks fresh and inviting. Bathrooms/showers just great and plenty of them. No waiting. Big and looks very much like the recent reno I did in my new place.

Food tonight is curry duck and rice, pizza, with cheeses and fruits with sushi like wraps. Happy with that.

Drinks with one type of red on offer. Good though. Beers in bottles.

Internet is good but it took a while to find where the power plugs are located.

The staff absolutely excellent. Best in any lounge I've seen. Plenty of them and always clearing away and tidying up as well as checking supplies. Very attentive.

Musak ewwww. That combined with TV noise.

Was using my EEE and how I love it. Had to move when my quiet little corner was invaded by a group who regarded the place as a local taverna with as much yelling, shouting and p*****g people off as possible. Surely staff could ask people like this to quieten down not just here in Honkers but everywhere. It just annoys me so much that people consider a lounge to be another venue for a noisy family discussion/fight/vendetta/murder attempt and groups who just want to party. Give us a break and lounge attendants please make others aware of this. I know you shouldn't have to.

Moved to the Macs. Found a nice book that I wanted that someone on a previous flight thoughtfully left for me. Was in the new HEL lounges a few days ago with new Macs too. Wonder what deal they have with airport lounges.

cough - boarding call. But love it when they call.

Just wanted to leave a comment for anyone who only has J lounge access at HK Airport.

I visited QF J lounge near gate 15 yesterday morning (was flying QF88 to Sydney - departing gate 28).

It is nice and quiet, but the breakfast offering "dim sim" was only a pork bun (char siew bao). There was a reasonable bacon and egg tart, and then continental offerings... (Bonaqua bottles were 330ml in size)

The internet there is cough - could not get my iPhone working properly - email and other apps did not work.

I made some polite inquiries and comments to the ladies at the front desk, and then made my way over to the CX lounge near gate 3.

For breakfast, it was definitely worth the walk - they had the standard 2 varieties of steamed dumplings that I've seen in the past, and the cook/flunky had a lovely pan fried vegetarian bun which was brilliant.

CX offer 500ml bottles of Bonaqua, whereas QF only offered 330ml.

It didn't matter in the end, as they have now started searching your bags on the airbridge and I had to give up the water. This is new to me, as I have had no issues or inspections after passing security in the past (GFC has meant I have not flown for 15months, but even so, I could do this at NRT). They are also going to be shafting anyone buying duty free grog!!!!
