Hi AFF, this is my first review! My review of the Holiday Inn Express at Melbourne Southbank

Hotel Group: IHG
My Reward Tier: Silver Elite
Room booked: Queen standard
Room received: Queen standard
View: riverside, main window NW facing
Perks: Late Happy Hour 9-11pm (all guests), late checkout subject to availability (silver and up)

What I like about the Holiday Inn is that free breakfast appears to always be included. Considering current cafe pricing and factoring in card/weekend surcharges, breakfast gives the opportunity to put together a sneaky sandwich or similar bits and pieces for lunch later in the day. This leaves you free to focus on picking from one of Melbourne’s many cafes with less pressure to pay cafe prices for food, at least for one less meal.

The HIX itself won’t serve a high quality Melbourne cafe-style coffee, but it was sufficient for a morning wake up. Instant tea and coffee in my room hadn’t been restocked or perhaps was kept low knowing the above. The room was clean and didn’t smell. The bed was firm; hard and soft pillow labels were embroidered on the pillowslips. The shower only had a handheld head, no rainhead. The city map in the frosted shower glass was a nice touch of design.

I didn’t know it when I booked this hotel that ProInvest Group had secured NABERs ratings for all of its HIX hotels. There were no advertisements on the property about the NABERs rating specifically aside from general environmental sustainability which I was surprised they hadn't made into a selling point. This could be because when you look into their certificate, even with rooftop solar (45kW) their total renewable electricity use sits at 9%, with 37% coming from non-renewable electricity sources, and 54% from gas. In-room the double glazing didn’t do much to insulate traffic noise. There was an extra door hanger you could put on your door to earn 500 bonus points per night if you opted out of housekeeping. These haven’t been credited yet.

A solid choice if you're after an easy no frills room for the night.
