Hong Kong Airport - Are you able to leave when in transit

This is to ensure the airline is not fined for not collecting the relevant taxes. In many countries there are different taxes and charges due if a passenger "enters" the country rather than remains as a transit passenger. If you plan on entering the country, ensure the airline knows this before issuing the ticket so then can note the location as a stopover rather than a transit and hence collect the correct taxes and charges.

After thinking about it for a while, I wonder if another reason is to do with Qantas et.al not wanting to be fined if you attempt to enter and are denied entry. In this case, I'm not sure you would be deported back home, (rather you'd be moved onto your end destination) - but I wonder if Qantas etc would still be fined.

I know I've "broken the rules" several times by leaving while in Transit. Wonder if anyone really cares - airport/airline included.

I doubt an airline could get out of a fine (if the authority chose to impose one that is) by pointing to such a clause.

Probably not, but the airlines want to ensure they are covered just in case it all goes pear-shaped.

I have done this too on a 22 hour 11pm-9pm transit with a snooze at a Hong Kong Hotel.

I guess in my case ignorance was bliss. ... :?

I'm doing something similar next month, but in this case it's been booked as a stopover so I would have alreay paid the HKD120.

Wondering how this situation would pan out? A friend will return from a European trip with family via NRT. Arrives morning (I think around 10:00), leaves evening (I think around 19:00), and doesn't want to sit around the airport for 9 hours if possible.

Japan tax:

SW INT PASSENGER SERVICE FACILITIES CHARGE 2,040 Yen

INT DEPT
INT DEP FROM NRT
Exemptions
INFANTS/INTNL TRANSFER PAX CONNECTING WITHIN THE SAME CALENDAR DAY

I read it as "doesn't matter, can go through C&I and have a look round Narita city or (albeit not for too long) Tokyo, without worrying about paying that charge"

Have I read that right?

Thanks.

Not sure that anyone cares. You and I are not the only ones that have "broken the rules". Would I play it by the book next time? Not sure as it is AY involved and not QF.

I see it as an ignorance game.

I book a ticket from here->there. The taxes are lumped together - hell they're a big enough amount these days (fuel tax included :D). They are not itemised. How do I know what has been paid and not paid...

the e-ticket receipt for my DONE4 has the taxes itemised. But that does not mean anyone would be any wiser about what is included or not .

That's the way I read it.

Thanks for the reassurance ;) ...I would have felt dreadfully guilty advising him it was ok and watching him cop fines and/or hassles.
