At the end of the day hotel status has no cost to Velocity.
Hilton benefits from getting patronage they may have otherwise never received.

While there are limits in the Velocity terms - seriously... both Velocity and Hilton benefit from the scanario no matter what the case.

I've taken more than 1 match with Velocity and it worked fine

This sums it up really well. Until my first match with Velocity to Gold which got me Hilton Gold, I hadn't really bothered with the brand. Since then I've had around 15+ stays with the brand.

As for the current status match to Velocity Gold, its just put me off actually ever flying Virgin. The lack of knowledge at the call centre when I rang to discuss this issue. The fobbing me off to email gold@velocity... assuring me of a response and the two responses that didn't even address my questions has just left me wondering why I'd bother to fly Virgin after all this. The only reason to actually give them some business is my general annoyance with QF.

So instead of for zero cost to Virgin have a guy who usually flies QF go on about the great customer service etc, they now have someone who is peeved and more likely to bad mouth them than suggest to his friends/colleagues to give Virgin a go.
