I am looking forward to my first trip to Shanghai. I prefer minimum 4 stars but I will be rate driven. I may burn some HH or SPG points, but I wondered if members might be able to make any recommendations.

I would also appreciate any restaurant recommendations.

I stayed at the Shanghai Hilton last year. The experience was so so. The hotel was busy with tired airline crews crossing paths with awakening airline crews. Plenty of standard USA business folk on corporate rates. The location was in a business district. The hotel staff were nice.

Later I stayed at the Hyatt on the Bund. It has wonderfully appointed rooms, a little arty, nice for working, fantastic views. Has the best total block-out blinds. It is located on a couple of streets away from the Bund but it is a very nice destination.

I stayed at both the Four Seasons and the Westin in November 2009. Both locations were good, I do recall a great breakfast at the Four Seasons.

The view looks priceless, thanks for sharing. I am always a little cautious with Hyatt, some of their properties seem a little too clinical for my taste, but there are certainly worse places to stay!

Hyatt on Bund, Vue restaurant and bar, way to go. Club Lounge is OK

For something a little different:
Waterhouse at South Bund:
The Waterhouse at South Bund
Excellent service. Comfortable, well designed rooms. Interesting edgy decor. Free mini bar, with Nespresso. Staff who go the extra mile. Good in house restaurant.
Not for those who prefer the standardised chains, though.

More info please mark - how many nights in Shanghai?

When you say you are rate driven just how high or low are you intending to drive?

Are you travelling alone?

Is it totally leisure travel or do you have daytime committments?

i have stayed several times at the Swissotel. I find it comfortable, clean and staff are friendly. Also very close to Najing Rd and markets

I have booked the Hotel Indigo (IHG) for a few days in May. Seems to be good hotel and was recommended to me. I will let you know what its like. Apparently has a great bar overlooking the Bund and is a little funky and Arty whatever that means.

The Peace Hotel seems to have the reputation on the Bund but a little out of my budget

Andy Peace Hotel is indeed an institution - whatever you do make sure you at least call in there for 1 drink post 11pm and just listen to the jazz band they will knock your sox off.

And take a night cruise on the river - the view of The Bund as you return has to be seen to be believed.

FWIW 90% of my accom in Shanghai is at Hua Ting Hotel - used to be Sheraton property before they moved to Tai Ping - HT still 5 stars - not that bright but still 5 stars - I can get you guys nights there at RMB600 if anybody interested.

This hotel will suit anybody who needs to watch the $$$'s - it's kinda a little out of way but it suits me perfectly as have been to SH a million times.

I stayed at Le Royal Meriden right on Nanjing Lu last week - stayed there several times before - won't stay there again - so many disappointments - but that's life. Had a terrible experience at Sofitel Hyland a few years back will never stay there again - YMMV of course.

In SH I always stay Puxi side - never Pudong - subway system in SH so good so simple - just download Shanghai Metro app and you can't go wrong - SH such a wonderful city - China such a wonderful country - Chinese such a wonderful gentle race of people - go there and enjoy.

Thanks for posting - yes please let us know how you get on there.

Slightly OT, I have heard that there are opportunities to make some decent savings on purchases of goods, if anyone has experience of that which they feel able to share that would make for interesting reading too.

Definitely stay in Puxi not Pudong if this is your first visit. Last time we snagged an amazing deal to stay at the Peninsula right on the Bund, view at night from the bar was similar to that shown above for the Hyatt. The rate included a spa and dining credit which we used also for a lovely meal and massage. Rooms are to die for. Definitely the best rooms I have ever stayed in and bathroom exceptional. All in all a 5 star experience for only a 4 star price, if that.

Check our their website for special deals!

Cheers

Timmi

hmm, sorry I don't really remember but I think it was a weekend only deal as I know I had a show starting Monday but we arrived the weekend before (this was late October/early November last year), stayed at the Pen and saw some sights, got a massage etc before moving over to Pudong on the Sunday night to join our colleagues at the 4 points Sheraton (a SERIOUS downgrade from the Pen!). $250 USD a night is about my limit, it would have been a little more than that but with the spa and dining credits I figured it was worth it as long as you used them.

have only ever stayed at Sofitl Hyland since 2005. great location and Club rooms fantastic, if its your birthday beware of the cake! It is gorgeous!

I've stayed twice at Le Royal Meriden, I like it a lot but it's a bit far from The Bund if you really want to stay down that end of the city. A new Hotel Indigo has opened at Shanghai which could be worthy trying if you prefer a smaller funkier boutique hotel.

Yes, have not stayed at that Indigo, although have been happy with two others that I have used - and saw the new Shanghai version, which is quite close to the Waterhouse, recommended earlier. I don't know how the prices compare, as we had an excellent rate at the Waterhouse through Mr & Mrs Smith.

I spent 5 nights at the grand Mercure shanghai zhonga. Gorgeous, great location for me w day trips out of shanghai railway station just across the square and a metro exit right next to the hotel. Got a lovely upgrade due to plat le club Accor status.
