The new tower of the Shangri-La Pudong is pretty spectacularly good.

More info please mark - how many nights in Shanghai?

When you say you are rate driven just how high or low are you intending to drive?

Are you travelling alone?

Is it totally leisure travel or do you have daytime committments?

4 nights in Shanghai, I am travelling alone and it is totally leisure. I was wrong to use the phrase rate driven, it might have been better put seeking value at the top end.

A pal of mine who is well travelled claims that that Park Hyatt is possibly the best he has stayed at in the world. I could be persuaded to stay here.

I have narrowed down my choice to

Grand Hyatt where I may consider reported stunning views and the advantages ( if any ) of Platinum status., balanced against

Intercontinental Shanghai Expo, where the rate is better, possibly equally good views, and I am PC Platinum, although this status does not come with anything special other than a chance of a room upgrade.

If you have Hilton status and honours points check out the Waldorf Astoria.

They sometimes offer points and pay rewards that are a Bargain. Works out about 20k pts and $100 aud per night.

Bund view is amazing and the service has always been great in the 5 times I've stayed in the last year.

Never stayed at the grand or park Hyatt but visited the bar and been for dinner at both. Agree the view is good although arguably the wrong side of the river and I have never found the service that welcoming even for a drink or dinner which is unusual in China.

That is a first class recommendation. I took one of these combi rates once for London - top value.
I already took a look at the Waldorf Shanghai reviews and I do agree it has to be up there 'in the medals'.

Thanks for the contribution.

re Waldorf A, I have read that the rooms are very different in the old club and the new tower. Should I be reaching out for an allocation in the new?

I've always been in the tower bund view std room or suite. I think the old bit are all suites or at least get butlers etc. tower have always been great for me.

The thing I would recommend is the hotel limo from the airport. Not that cheap but fantastic door to door service and saves all the hassle of Shamghai station.
