Hotels in Hawaii Where to stay what to do & look out for?

Hi

My friend and I are going to Hawaii in a few months time and was wondering if you have been there or know any good tips about Hawaii?

Any good recommendations on where to stay?
What to do?
What to avoid?

we will be there for 5 days and want to stay in a central location, any information would be much appreciated

In Honolulu My own tip would be to stay one block back from the beach (Waikiki). Hotels on the beach charge a significant premium. I stayed at the Aqua Palms Waikiki, a stock standard motel type place, immediately behind the enormous Hilton complex, facing the beach. With 5 mins walk, you can use all the facilities of the Hilton (food joints, bars etc), except the pools, and of course enjoy the beach.

Also go out to one of the outer islands, if only for a day or two. I went to the Big Island for the volcano, but each have their own good points.
