What's this about free wine/beer after 4pm? I though they started serving it in the QP after 1pm, not forgetting all day in the international lounges. So why would I have to wait till after 4pm?
.

After 4pm on the actual flights QF has free alcohol... don't stress!;)

Oh, that's a useful bit of information. Is that written anywhere on the Qantas site, never knew that.

I assume you mean domestic flights though. International ones still serve alcohol at all hours huh :p Just gotta make sure I take those international connections.

Thanks for those tips. I just did a dummy booking for August and managed to get $397.50 return. That's pretty good value I reckon.
What route was that for, BNE-ADL, ADL-CBR return? Best I can get is $448, so that price is good. Note that if the ADL-CBR is via MEL then you will only earn 20 SC, and the fare is $10 cheaper.

Not sure if it is mentioned on the Qantas website but beer/wine is complimentary on all CityFlyer services Mon-Fri after 4pm. I have forgotten if non CityFlyer services are included.

Not many international flights left operating domestic legs though. Also as far as I am aware Qantas follows domestic guidelines in regards to alcohol service even if an international flight on a domestic leg.

I used the multi-flights tool, booking BNE - ADL (via MEL) and then ADL - CBR (via SYD) on one day and the reverse for the day after. Some days gave slightly different prices, but BNE - ADL was cheapest of $115 and ADL - CBR cheapest was $109. Same for coming back.

I found that if I booked for just one-way (BNE through to CBR) in one booking I'd get $224 ($220.66 after review), but by booking BNE - CBR - BNE in one go got me a big discount to the quoted price before of $397.50. Don't ask me why.

If you want to test this yourself, I chose the BNE - CBR trip on Friday August 14th and the return the very next day. Don't select anything above the $115/$109 limits.

If you switch it round to go BNE - ADL (via SYD) and ADL - CBR (via MEL) you lose 5SC somewhere, so I didn't think it was worth it.

Obviously those prices will get slightly more expensive from tomorrow, will have to wait for the next sale before I decide to buy.

So the only advantage is access to the international QP (or F lounge if WP).

Yes and travelling on better aircraft albeit only short flights like the A330 SYD-ADL or ADL-SYD. I think the 747-400s don't do domestic legs anymore.

Oh and I almost forgot, is it possible to pickup duty free when arriving on an international flight, even if only flying domestically? I'm running out of export-quality vodka for my martini's.

Technically not legal to get duty free that way although some people try it on and if challenged at the counter, claim their "wife" has the tickets with her at the gate so they will get them and come back!

The chutzpah of some people!

might find something cheaper (but that doesn't earn points) on wotif if I do decide to pursue such a trip.

But it's a MR - you have to earn points for it!!:mrgreen:

What's this about free wine/beer after 4pm? .

Cityflyer flights departing after 4pm on weekdays get free beer/wine.

Also, I thought most lounges were now 12pm, not 1pm?

Yep, a few photos of Freddie Jnr at the QP shows the sign saying 12pm.

And I have been served beer ~5-10 minutes earlier at T2 Sydney. I was hanging around the bar and looking at the sign and waiting for the time to pass and the barman noticed how thirsty I looked so he served me a beer. ;)

So I pretty much have to get my vodka another way, bugger.

If anyone was wondering about the increase in fares now that the sale is over.
same flights come to $543.51, which is $146.01 more expensive. Still not bad value, but I'd book this in a sale if I ever did such a run.

Now since you make a holiday out of it then its not really a MR is it ;) and more fun that way.

Please don't use the word 'holiday'. Miss Wannabee will be less than impressed if I am having a holiday by myself .
I prefer to call it research, I will be researching *C prior to our Honolulu trip. I will also be earning more FF points (can sell it to her as an upgrade opportunity) and getting WP (so she will be able to sample the F lounge). Wish me luck...

Looking more into it, I really think that this will be a goer. I am keen to try out the capsule hotel , and at only 4000 yen per night ($54 AUD) what a bargain. If you google capsule hotel Tokyo you will see the one that I mean (I can't post links yet).

Anyone keen for a trip to Tokyo or got any recommendations on things to do? I will probably go for 4 days...

It does look interesting, however not sure I could last 4 days in one of these:

In 2007 I went to Japan for a mountaineering trip in April, after the trip the cherry blossoms were in full bloom. Not sure if it's the right time for it, but they're certainly very popular with locals and tourists alike.

Make sure you have some sushi, I missed out!

Fantastic place, however please do be aware that the time of year you will be there it will be quite humid. I went in July, so can attest to that!

In terms of what you want to do, personally I'd either fly to KIX and do Osaka/Kyoto (can easily see the highlights in 4 days) as you will definitely get to soak up a lot more of the culture. Tokyo is just 'another big concrete city' lacking in a lot of culture, as a lot of it has been destroyed during wars and such.

If flying to KIX doesn't nett you enough SC and you need to fly to NRT I'd recommend the Shinkansen (Bullet Train) to / from NRT to Shin-Osaka station, spending 1 night in Osaka (so 2 full days if you can) and 2 nights in Kyoto.

Let me know what you decide and I can then tailor some more specific information on things to do.

Keen to try out capsule hotel? I guess it appeals to some people but for the life of me I could not understand why....

It's an experience to be had. The capsules aren't very big at all, so it's a tight fit for the roly-poly. They also pose slight difficulties for the tall (of which amongst Japanese men there aren't many).

You don't normally stay in a capsule hotel because it's cheap accommodation per se, but for non-Japanese it is one of those novelty things you "just" have to do. I'd advise going with as small a bag as possible - the lockers they give you don't look very big, unless the person in charge is OK with your leaving a bag behind the counter or the like.

I would have liked to try a capsule hotel the last time I was in Japan, but there wasn't one conveniently located. On top of that, the prices weren't all that good at the time (and the weak AUD->JPY didn't help one little bit).

Not my cup of tea. Going out with Angelina Jolie would one of the things "you" just have to do. And yes I know I have buckley's chance.

I only want to do it due to the been there done that thing...
I have added capsule hotels to the list of things never to be attempted in life like parachuting, snow skiing, hang gliding, abseiling, base jumping etc etc....

Flashware,

Thanks so much for the ideas. I have just been looking at *C fares for KIX and the bullet train etc. Now Miss Wannabee has got wind that there is a Disneyland there so looks like this may become 'our' holiday after all and I will have to find somewhere else to go for the points after all.

For the life of me I can't work out how to work out how many SC are earn't SYD - KIX as it is not a Qantas route and so it won't work in the calculator???
