Can anyone explain how the waitlisted award bookings work on Asia Miles?

I've waitlisted through the Asia Miles website for 2 J class FCO-SYD next October.

I'm wondering what the chances are of being able to get the flights I've waitlisted for. Sorry if this is a newbie question!

Hopefully this is of some help to you. I don't have any direct experience with Asiamiles.

Some airlines have award seats as Avaliable, Waitlist or Unavaliable.
If a flight has a waitlist, it means that Revenue Management expects some seats to be unsold at about 7 days out. I wouldn't expect your award seats to clear before this, unless forward booking are more sparse than expected or an award ticket is cancelled and put back into the pool.

I would book something else as a backup, as it's probably 50/50 if it clears. Someone else with more asiamiles experience could probably give a better indicator of whether waitlists generally clear or not.

Thanks for the explanation!

I booked J for SYD-HKG-JFK and waitlisted for F for HKG-JFK at the same time about a year out. The seats didn’t clear and I could see some empty seats in F as I walked by to J.

I’d waitlist with the expectation of it possibly clearing only days out from travel date. Best to have a backup in place just in case.

Funny thing - I got an email from Cathay saying my flight time had changed, but I had never received a confirmation that my waitlisted flight was approved (and it was).

In the meantime, I had already secured an award booking with SQ.

Do I need to bother cancelling the CX award flight that was approved in Asia Miles?
