How lenient is Virgin with hitting Platinum

I was comped one year but I had done many flights but just didn't get SC but did the flights. I did a few OS and also a few one way inter state flights. So they could see me making an attempt to use them. I did a few return trips as well and my spend was massively increased over the previous year that I earned WP. As I did a few last minute bookings and JQ had cancelled a flight and booked VA at the last minute from the counter.
