I have an upcoming flight to Canberra later this year. Unfortunately it has been booked separately so I have one single booking with my Amex complimentary flight from PER-SYD. I then need to get to CBR. I talked to Virgin and they said they cant send the bags straight through or check me in the entire way as it is two separate bookings.
How long would you say I need as a stopover in SYD to retrieve my bags and check in again? I dont fly domestically very often and last time I went to SYD the baggage handling was delayed and I had to wait 45 minutes for my bag.

It is what it is ... for baggage alone I would allow 90 minutes.

For connecting on separate tickets, I would double that. Having stated that, I do have lounge access, so being 'on time' is not such an issue.

Yes, that is what I am thinking. I would rather have too much time then miss my connection and , like you, I do have lounge access so it wont be a big thing to wait.
Thank you for the help.

You can ask when you check-in at Perth to check your bag all the way through for Canberra. I have done this before on two seperate bookings some time ago. Don't have recent experience since Perth went nearly 100% self service.

I'd recommend printing or writing down all your flight times to show at Perth check in, I've had experience with cancelled or delayed flights before where check-in staff have had trouble understanding. I don't print iteneraries usually but I learnt a lesson a while ago that if my flight(s) are cancelled or severely delayed I'll write down my original booking info on a piece of paper and then write down my preferred recovery option. Having all the info easily available for check-in staff may give you more success if an agent sees it as being "less difficult"
