How many people actually fly F in their lives?

I just switched a long haul from Los Angeles to Sydney to First Class by moving out one more day. The QF premium desk was terrific.

We've flown F twice SYD SIN DXB and HND SIN SYD with SQ using points. I earned less money last year than TomVexille but we have managed to fly mainly J over the past 5 years with some Y thrown in to keep perspective, all on points. Would I pay $$ for it? Apart from being a mute point financially, probably not, even if I had the funds.

I quite like PE and given we fly mainly 6-7 hour day flights, this is fine for us. However, as we fly SQ a bit, the minimal points difference between PE and J is worth spending the extra to fly J.

In a fortnight we are flying SYD NRT with JL in J - I would have stumped up the extra points for F just for the Salon but sadly no more F SYD NRT.

Completely unrepresentative sample here. Most Australians would NEVER fly F in their lives, and I don't mean 51% most, neither.

Three times, for me. FRA-DFW on AA as an upgrade from J, and SYD-DXB-IKA award on EK. A bunch of times on AA domestically, but that's not real F.

That's in a lifetime of flying.

If I came into enough money, I might consider an AONE4 just to get the status credits for a couple of years WP, and get me closer to LTG. And maybe the odd award flight for my wife and I.

Longhaul F is very nice, but I'm dubious as to whether it's really worth the actual cash money over J. That extra money could pay for some very nice toys, or top-notch hotels at the destination.

Once and only time in F was Brisbane to Auckland and my rational was I had to at least see what it was like and to do so I hid it under the guise of an anniversary treat for the Mrs. ;)

In the future I can only ever see myself flying F as a reward ticket or upgrades. But I'm only at the start of a lifetime of flying so I doubt it'll happen until I'm no longer cash, points and time poor.

I'm surprised this thread is still going since it's really just a means of trying to achieve "bragging rights". I thought it should have died a natural death after just a few days, but there you go..........

My guess is that some people are so wealthy that travelling F is just an extension of their usual lifestyle. I doubt they bother (much less need) to talk about it much. They are the only "real" F fliers.

For nearly all the rest F flying and accessing the F lounge for the "free" Dom (whether via paid fare or award redemptions) are just a way of stroking one's ego and then boring your friends with all the trivial details like how you got Dior face cream in the special F amenities pack. And believe me if you want to make your friends cringe with the most boorish conversation then just start talking about your F travels. Flying F is a means of fantasising about being a rich person when you know it's never likely to be true.

It's akin to hiring a Ferrari or Lambo for your birthday - you get to pretend that it's yours for a day or so but in the end reality has to kick in and you have to go back to worrying about how you're going to making the next rent or mortgage payment.

Writing this I know the flack will come thick and fast. I won't be ducking my head (because I'm right) but I won't be engaging in any replies either because I know how all the easily offended can turn agro on this forum. To each their own.

.. My guess is that some people are so wealthy..... .

My US boss flies to work in his personal Citation X something and then takes a helicopter from the airport to the office (he flies them himself) ... That's his normal and I don't begrudge him at all for enjoying the perks.

I'm guessing most AFFers use points. Let's be honest, most dont care to read a review on economy seating or food.

Maybe the question should have been - who paid for F?

Had to laugh at the first comment, it's the same F seat/food/champagne no matter how you got there. But agree on the second point.

Wow!! What an amazingly lucky man! A dream.

Part family dna, part took over the company and worked for it. Good luck to him, I don't envy him.

Company picnics, he has $20 helicopter rides. Money goes to charity but he knows people will take anything free, so if they fork out $ then it has more value to them.

He also takes over the company public announcement system at times and tells people to go home.

Not the foggiest, but a really small number. And the main reason is obviously cost...which is where internet fora like this become very handy. Other than a flight as a kid picked up by dad's company, I had never flown F, and would never have until relatively recently even considered it within the realms of possibility.
A mix of points upgrades, purchase and redemption of airline miles with heavy bonuses, really good sale fares and the sadly extinct mASAs has enabled about a dozen F flights in recent years, with more, I hope, in the pipeline. Wouldn't have happened but for AFF and the like.

Actual paid-for F? Umm a few, incl EK apartments last year to LHR (a mix of indifferent and superb legs) but most were in earlier days using QF points, or when CX still had F from Aust. They wud frequently op-up FF's at the gate. Doesn't happen like that any more..

If the question was who pays for first class it would really thin out the numbers.

EY apartments?

Only once on BA using AA points. Id probably got with a middle east or CX J instead in future.

I organized F on Etihad Mel to AUH to ZRH for my parents and a separate flight for me F on Ethihad Mel to AUH to LHR... then return
F return on Singapore Airlines ZRH to SIN to SYD

First time, hopefully not the last time.
